Loi Krathong - I'll be there!
One of my favourite Thai festivals.
"The floating of a ‘Krathong’ – a banana–leaf cup – is intended to float away ill fortune as well as to express apologies to Khongkha or Ganga, the River Goddess. Some believe that the ritual is meant to worship the Buddha’s footprint on the bank of the Narmada River, while others say that it is to pay respect to Phra Uppakhut, one of the Lord Buddha’s great disciples."
Head down to the beach, buy a banana leaf boat, light the candle, put some silver and a piece of hair or nail in it. Give to someone who will wade out into the sea for me and set it sail. Make a small prayer.
On the way back buy a khom fai and watch that go up in the sky. Its great!

Any idea when Loi Krathong is this year , have been out before and know how much the Thais love this festival. Also know that it's other name , as used by the expats is Lost Katoy.

I'll be there too in Bangkok for the festival, I originally thought it was the 16th but my lady friend has emailed me saying it's the 17th ??
Anyways...I'm really looking forward to it as I haven't witnessed this particular festival b4.

Saw it last year and feel sorry to just miss it this year!
Nice to see the Thais having fun together. There was a downside though. Drunk Thais everywhere on the beach, fighting and crying....

I planned my stay in Phuket around the Loy Kratong festival.Spent it in Pattaya last year and it was great.Definately one of my favorite memories from last year's trip.
I've heard that lovers launch their banana leaf boats together and if they stay together it means the relationship will last.I've also heard of TG's lashing the boats together.5555555(maybe that was on this board.)
It has been said that if you want to know who a TG really loves, see who she launches her banana leaf boat with.
I may have some pictures of sexy women in Loy Kratong costumes but I don't want to force anything onto you guys.

Don't want to leave anyone out so here's one for the ladyboy lovers. That katoey in white usually wore a little black skirt and white blouse and was stunning!I was watching kickboxing next door one night and suddenly saw her standing out front of a bar.(I didn't know it was Jenny Star Bar)I went right over and said"hello, you are very beautiful"
She said "hello, you know I am ladyboy"
I said"I do now!"
Chatted a little more but didn't do the deed.Closest I ever came to crossing over.Proved to me theres' such a thing as 100% convincing.(face anyway)
Anybody know who I'm talking about?Maybe she's already famous.

I was there a few years ago and it was very crowded and so many fireworks with idiots throwing them into the crowd. There were so many people you could not move if the fire works were thrown near you. My ears were still ringing the next day. A lot of smoke from the fire works also going through the crowd. This was up on the main bridge near the night bazaar. The celebrations go on for a few days in Chiang Mai from memory and it is pretty crazy but most of the BGs get dressed up for it.

I am sure you have a valid point, but why is it best in Chang Mai?

There is a big parade (2 nights) with decorated chariots manned with people (mostly young women) in traditional dress. Looks a bit like some carnivalparades (well, more Thai tradition, not brazilian fun). Chiang Mai is also more than one day. And everybody goes to the river, near the same bridge. Also at the end of the parade they put the chariotdecoration on a raft and you see them floating down the river.
I agree, a lot of firecrackers, way to much.

I'm sure it's great up there and everything but what is to say it's better there then celebrating in Bangkok, which is after all the capital of thailand and going draw the biggest crowds/celebrations?
I will be in Bangkok I think for Loy Kratong, simply because the lady I am with recommends this to be the number one place to be for the festival.
