Vaccinations for LOS

Inspired by another thread here I got to wonder about vaccinations and stuff for LOS.

Which vaccinations do you get or already have before travelling to LOS on vacation? What about you expats - I guess you got it all..

The Danish health department recommends Hepatitis A vaccine for LOS but other than that it is pretty open. Any of you have the Hepatisis B vaccine?

I was going to post a thread on this actually, as l visited my Doctor last week who informed me that my Hep B vaccination shots were not taking....apparently this happens to 1% to 2% of people, whose body rejects the shots.

Doctor said, just need to be more careful re condom use etc, as Hep B is "rife" in SE Asia.

I too was interested if any BM's do not even bother getting these vaccination shots.

Yeah Mav I read on the Danish healthdepartment that if you are going to engage in "sexual contact with the local population" Hepatitis B is recommended. However, I am too late to get that now - You need 1 shot 1 month before you go and 1 shot 1 week before. Then you need a third shot after a year if you want the vaccine to stay active for 20/10 years.

I got the tetanous (or whatever it's called) and diphtheria so far - I'm gonna get the Hep. A before I go as well.

I have to be 'up-to-speed' on my shots to stay in the job I do, No Jabs - No job, however, I would always advise trying not to let any of your vaccines lapse if at all possible.

I also have what the Doctors told me was Hep A/B (Shock-Horror! ) from drinking water from a river in Sarajevo a long time ago and not realising what was in that water a little further up stream! I won't go there here. However, it's not good and I can no longer donate blood to any transfusion service which I used to do on a regular basis (I like biscuits, tea and nurses!) So please take what your Doctor recommends you need.

Make sure you 'Bag up' and read the thread on sticking your tongue where the sun don't shine!! - 'Up to you' as they say but definately with a partner you know the long term sexually history of IMHO.

Definately take a tetanus booster if required or you are almost lapsing or out of date on that.

Unfortunate nickname Hep!! 555555555 but definately brought the subject to the fore-front. Play safe!!

Anyone noticed like I have that when getting a jab at the doctors, it's always the blokes with the tattoos who are whimpy and girly when they flash the needle? 55555555

Yes l got all those shots done in 2000, but was surprised when l had a blood test done after my recent trip to LOS, and my Doctor said l was not covered for Hep B.....and would never be able to be......must say it's a bit of a concern, even though l use condoms (had 2 break last trip though)

Got Hep A and Hep B before I ever even thought about going to LOS. Just common sense to get now matter where you live, IMHO.

Same as you Denver , all my jabs have to be bang up to date , also used to have to get HIV test every 6 months while working in the Middle East. Now get tested if there is any "risk" at work.

if you are going for HEP A then do HEP B as well, they are usually cobined.
If you are running out of time, there is a possibility of getting the vaccination rather quick -3 weeks- Jab on day 0, day 7 and day 21. the last jab 1 year after (just to refresh). My doc told me, that you usally get 80% protection from the 1st jab.

Any suggestions on where to get a Japanese Encephalitis shot here in the states?

My doctor said he doesn't do vaccinations and to contact a clinic. I called the local health clinic and they do Hep A/B and Tetnus, but not Japense Encephalitis. They told me to contact my doctor to get it. DOH!

If you have time before you leave get Twinrix for hep a-b. If not, at least get what shots you can. Basic protection with one shot but should really have the second a week later then the booster after 1 year.

Tetnus (?) get no matter what. Should have it at home too.

My health system here has a specialized travel clinic. They cover it all; shots, health update counseling for the region, general health advise etc.. They even wrote me a prescription of a three pill series of antibiotics in case I get nasty intestinal problems that the over-the counter meds won't control. They told me that most of the antibiotics that you can buy there actually are not effective because of over/misuse. If you have a similar clinic where you live I recommend a visit...

Check again for hep B - there is a quick regime that gives you around 70% cover.

Yes there is one you can get that will cover you 4wks before you have to go back and get a second one, And then you get the third after 6months.

PS: By the way once you get typhoid you will be covered for 3yrs, And then if you do the course of Tetenus you will be covered for 5yrs, Somehow I have never made it back for my boosters of Hep A/B Combo but when I was in the Gum clinic for my final check-up 2months back, My Hep levels were still really high and he told me that I probably wont need to get another booster this time because they were so high.

In all my years of living and playing in Asia, in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines, I have never had any shots, and all I have suffered from have been severe skull cramps the following morning.

Go to Sierra Leone Steve, I can guarantee that within a day of arrival you will have caught pretty much everything that can make you say............."I'm not really having a good day today am I?" A lovely place.

Well, apart from Rickets but you only have to go to Rochdale for that!

I think it is the slower stuff that gets to you eventually in the Far East countries. I suppose that's why they call them 'Tropical' diseases!! We always got checked (A TDI - Tropical Disease Investigation) when coming back from Brunei (Borneo -Malaysia -Philippines-ish) Most of the stuff the lads came back with was parasitic (Intestinal worms or larvae under the skin) and cured with a good hot bleach bath or minor surgery.

Still worth keeping the jabs up-to-speed IMHO especially if you can get your employers to pay for them!!

I guess what I'm trying to say, is keep the common ones up to date, but dont worry too much about the other exotic ones. Obviously do what you feel comfortable with.

I think that oral vaccination/prophylactic they call 'Singha' pretty much covers all the stuff you are likely to contract in the LOS!!
