Google Earth suggestions
Hi All,
My new hobby is to create an extensive and up to date Google Earth KMZ file for Phuket and the surrounding area.
I have attached a quick one I knocked together today to give you an idea of what I am going to be doing. (rename to .kmz)
I'm asking for your help with suggestions and hopefully actual co-ordinates of placemarks that would be interesting for people who live here or plan to visit in the future.
When the whole of Phuket is finally mapped extensively over the West Coast it should be a great resource for info on Phuket. I will also add a picture layer for easy viewing and will also update as many placemarks with information and pictures/web links. For now, I just need help with getting the obvious places mapped.
Suggestions?

uh yeah, you need to save it to your pc and then remove the .txt extension so it finishes .kmz This should then open in Google Earth.
Alternatively, which would probably be a better idea, in GE go to the Add Menu and select "Network Link"
paste this into the Location box:
http://www.theyeatmans.co.uk/GoogleEarth/Phuket.kmz
this will then connect and get the latest version. You can right click on the entry and select refresh in future and you will always be using the latest copy I have uploaded.
Take a look at Phuket Zoo under sightseeing, it should show a pic and a weblink.
Let me know what you think

renaming it with out the .txt didn't do anything - it still seemed to think it was a txt file!
Putting the web address into GE did indeed take it to the zoo.

Right click on the link and choose "save target as". When the filename comes up remove the "txt" and leave it with the "kmz" extension, watch out for the fullstop. Save it to your desktop.
Go to the desktop, click the link and it will open in GoogleEarth.
Hopefully.

the only option is "save link as". That comes up as only .kmz as the extension(no sign of .txt) but the only option for "save as file type" is as a text file. They don't like to be outsmarted, these computers!

I moved this thread to the new google Earth forum, and will upload Syeatman's kmz file again without the txt extension.

Very nice with google earth hints on Phuket.
Still waiting for the west coast to be high res, we have a few places of interest on east coast, I can f.ex. locate the pool in Big A Resort where I have had some good times.

I've copied that into my kmz file. If anyone wants to send me more I'll happily bung them all into mine.
Maybe we can host the kmz file on the phuket-info site somewhere??

If you want you can compile the ultimate Google Earth file, I like your collection so far but there is a lot of interesting places to add.
If you want you can manage the file and we host it here.

I guess if everyone just replies to this thread with their kmz files I can go through and do an update every few days or weekly and then this can be uploaded somewhere so it can be used in GE via a network link.
I'd also really like web links for as much as possible. This would then hopefully be useful for a newcomer to Phuket to locate hotels, bars etc and be able to get further info directly form GE, without having to trawl the web or post questions.
you are right, there is sooo much more to add, even before the west coast is high res.

You mean upgraded res ??
I still see everything from N Kamala along the SW coast as lower res.. Or do you mean you have added some info as a KMZ ??
Just got all excited (yeah simple things I know) as I was hoping for the patong high rez data that used by the other prog someone mentioned.
