Broker recommendations on ThaiVisa..
Personally I wouldnt touch the SET (investing) with a bargepole this year.. Lots of in debt compoanies with off sheet loans, poor accounting practices, lack of transparency, economy heavily under pressure from oil prices, etc.. Of course 'trading' and 'investing' are 2 different things...
Seems that trading without a WP is possible (impossible to get one in fact.. Who is your Thai employer ??)

Probably better to invest in a stockmarket you are somewhat more familiar with?

Dont need a WP to trade Thai Stocks, but broker will want valid visa to open a trading account, and you will most likely to be asked to fully fund it. Thai stock market is just like any other - as easy to make or loose money, and 'local info' helps a lot, but broker service is generally pretty poor and research in English is limted/useless. Paul Renauld at www.thaistocks.com may be a good place to start doing some background as he has a decent track record.
The SET daily turnover is 30-40% day trading ... this borders on 'mug punting' but if its your thing, then only requires 10% margin funding, so is potentially good leverage for the experinced day/technical trader.
Good brokers ? If you mean advice/research - would say none, all allow online trading, and most have (bucket) shops in most major towns. Kim Eng is the biggest broker and site is in English.

Thanx for the replys guys i will do some more research .
I lived in Phuket from march 2001 till sept 2004 i now spend 3 months in uk a month in Thailand and that suits for the moment .I just had a great holiday in december 05 and was in Thailand in sept 05. I have traded futures mkts for most of my working life mainly Base Metals and was thinking when the day comes if i finally come back to Thailand for good i could maybe start trading the SET which i guess is the same as the Ftse and s&ps .
I enjoy working and trading is something i enjoy .
Best regards .

Does anyone trade options ??? I would really like to talk to an active options trader to help me get an idea how to price and calculate leverage on commodity options..
Last year in the spring I wanted to take some options on Gold.. Had a guy who claimed to trade options and futures.. Trades actively with an kinda expensive trading platform etc.. So I go round and see him and he starts talking about puts and calls !! Erm not futures options.. When he started to say there was no difference I realized I was not getting the best advice !!!
I was told last spring I think that 5k usd would have got me control of a 220 ish block of gold options at 500 USD/oz before the end of 12/05 (price at the time was 410 - 415 and it was march I think).. I wanted to place that bet and it would have come up !!! Would have made 215,000 +- on that guess if the numbers I was given was correct..
I again want to take some options on long term gold prices but have no idea how to calculate leverage over time and price variables.. So anyone in that game PM me..

Hi S-
'Options, Futures and Other Derivative Securities' by John C Hull, Pentice Hall
Unless can handle the math in this - would advise leaving options alone.
Good luck mate,

Options are though by far the easiest of the futures and derivatives trinity..

Im not an expert on options but have read about them as I thought about doing them myself. Puts and Calls are part of options, You can buy a Put which gives you the right (but not the obligation) to sell X at the strike price specified. Buying a Call option gives you the right (but not the obligation) to buy X at the strike price specified. You can sell Options too but its unlimited risk for limited reward as you only get the premium (the purchase price of the option).

I understand hes wanting deeper knowledge than what I could hope to provide...I was just pointing out that his friend talking about calls/puts was right in that its all part of options no matter what you are trading. In a popular trading forum I go to options tend to be thought of as one of the most difficult forms of trading.

As a former options market maker (fixed income and FX) IMHO suggest that options are most certainly the least understood mainstream financial derivative - even now pricing models are evolving. Pricing time decay and true value is no easy task.

Thats the part I have no knowledge of.. Pricing time decay, calculating leverage variables over price / time..
Anyway I have the basic idea and just want to pursue it with some play money..
Last year I came to the conclusion that gold and precious metals had to rise due to deficits, Fed dollar printing, inflation, global financial risk increases.. That pattern has taken perfect shape and been immensely profitable as I leveraged a fair but using mining and exploration additional to bullion and ETF bullions..
I feel sure its going to contine and with the leverage of options plus the limited risk of only losing the fixed option price I could live with that better than futures.

You are of course correct and I was explaining that using very poor terminology...
What I meant to say is I had questions on options and he was then refering not to options puts and calls but purely to futures.. The unlimited risk (ok stop losses should be used) of futures is less appealing than the limited risk (no obligation to go through with it) of options..
Its new to me and I am trying to learn.. Just looking at other ways to leverage precious metls..

Just quick note: Another thing you might want to look into for longer term growth is Uranium....it was flat for many years but like gold has entered a multi year bull trend...especially with countries looking to go nuclear as a way to get off of oil dependance...

LOL I am already taking some positions in Uranium (much to my hippy mothers disgust) chinese gov is going hell for leather to build 100's of the new pebble bed reactors, high energy costs (oil) will necessitate new energy infrastructure throughout china, thier record on environmental concern is not exactly high and thier citizens dont get much chance to complain about gov projects.. Not only China are looking that way BTW oil is likely to be a much more expensive resource in the future and developing nations throughout will be looking for alternatives at the prices I expect it to maintain.
I am already with you on this !!! Agree 110% although I consider this a 'play' more than I consider gold which (in my mind these days) is the only true money.. I can even believe in a possible collapse of the fiat money systems through hyper inflation (happened before, in fact every fiat currency has failed so far) and as such think Gold and silver will go insane..
Maybe we should take this to PM's or MSN cause I dont know if it interests other members, but I have some great book, website and email newsletter reccomendations.. Maybe we could share our sources of info ??

Love to share info, although it seems you have the jump on me when it comes to Uranium as although ive talked briefly about it with some guys ages ago its only very recent Ive taken a keener full on interest in it (I have yet to take positions)....the companies I got pointed too are:
http://www.cameco.com/
http://www.denisonmines.com/
http://www.laramide.com/
http://www.megauranium.com/
http://www.ur-energy.com/
I got pointed to this news letter too, apparently hes spot on but ive always been reluctant to pay for newsletters as Im always really wary of potential snake oil.
