Suggestions on what to do in Amsterdam for 3 days?
Abould a week left till I get to LOS. I am really quite excited. I will be stopping over at Amsterdam just because my flight allows it. Many of you BMs have spent quite sometime traveling and I would like to see what you guys may recommend in Amsterdam (aside from the coffeeshopsand pubs of course )

Ah Amsterdam. Nice spot and the people are great as well. when i'm in Amsterdam I usually go over to Den Hague and check out the shopping/carnival atmosphere on the beach. Also don't forget the nice liquir ice creams shops in the area.
And of course the Red Light District

Loads of museums, Anne Franks house is pretty poignant and the maritime one is good if that, erm, floats your boat. Best way to see the city is on a boat tour, best bars are in the red light district.
Don't forget your camera, and don't take pictures in the red light area. The girls go crazy when they see cameras.

is there a park near to the RLD??? jeez i,m ashamed of myself , that i don't know that!!
i think its because i live about 15 min. away of Ams. that i don't know
[don't care?] of these places anymore, i one think about getting there and try to park my car, and go do my shopping
Probably the same for someone who lives in New York / London /bkk/ L.A./ Hong Kong/ etc.

ived in nyc for 12 years, never been to statue of libert, WTC(except to walk through it everyday for train) or empire state building
but where do you go to party?
as for the park. if you were coming from train station you'd walk by RLD until you got to the end of canal, i think thats a university. basically behind those buildings is a small park(square) with all bars and cafes

Whats your interests ??
Strippers and wild nudity.. The Banana bar was always good to take guys who had never been.. Lots of touchy feely fun and over the top whipped cream play.. Bring your wallet.
Of course theres window girls and sex.. The prive houses are actually a much better experience.. Again bring your wallet
I used to like the Liedseplien early evening for outdoor entertainers, or Rembrantsplien for the soul kitchen (still going ??) or the truly mental Escape club.. Sunday nights / Monday morning in the escape really brought out the freaks.
If you want to see a big venue superclub check out the Power zone (my old buddies) and my Dutch mate tells me that Jimmy Woo is very swank but unless you know people the door ***** can leave you begging for the honour of spending your money in there. Of course I am saying clubland dance clubs as thats my thing, theres rock alternative music venues and anything you could want.
If your not into being out in clubland all night, simply getting a rental pushbike and seeing the canal life especially the Kaisersgracht / Prinsengracht area IMHO is kinda cool, bike, explore, beer, people watch, repeat.. Get out of the red light and football lout areas for this.
I am not much of a museam kinda guy but have to admit that the Rijksmuseam is actually worth an hour or more.. The nachtwacht is indeed something very worth seeing, and thats from a complete phillistine in matters of the art..
Amsterdam is a really interesting city, but one that suffers from too many tourists sometimes.. Also Dutch people are very open minded and tolerant in many ways and I always found them easy to meet, talk to, get on with in general.
If you had more time I would suggest getting out of A'dam also, a trip to Den Haag is worthwhile and is an even more 'Dutch' somehow.. Also is home to the 4 or so best Irish bars in the country and has a large irish population.. I used to call it little Dublin. Only city I never really got on with was Rotterdam, always involved in hassle there..
One piece of advise is as interesting as it is to have a social scene around coffeeshops and available weed, go easy.. Dutch skunk is enough to knock even hardcore smokers back into the cushions for a while and spending too much time in a smokey dark bar is a waste.. Theres lots to see and experience and it would be a shame to just sit in a daze.

I may check out Jimmy Woo if it fits the budget. Honestly I have no real idea of what to expect at Amsterdam.
I think I'm probably just going to walk around and see as many interesting pubs and have a smoke or two. Personally I really don't want to spend too much money at clubs since I really want to do most of my partying at Patong and BKK. I figure just find an interesting square and sit and relax and peoplewatch.
Many thanks for the suggestions LIL. A cold one is on me. Will you be at Patong?

Obviously the RLD is a must-see and at this time of the year it will probably be best to walk round there around 8/9pm, in the summer the atmosphere is good and it's better around 11/12 o'clock.
The Heineken brewery can be a bit of fun and might be worth a visit if you like the beer.
As LIL says, Leidseplein is good for street acts and there's plenty of restaurants and bars down there. Beware the casino just around the corner - don't go spending all you LOS holiday money in there
Rembrantplein was my favourite for the night time, again lots of choices for bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
The museums are worth a visit and are pretty much located all together.
Finally, there's the canal cruises which go around the inner areas. Not great but you get to hear about a lot of Amsterdam that you probably won't get to see and the boats do go down the canals in the RLD

I may go down some other canals in the RLD. Probably not on the cruise though.

Not far behind behind Liedseplein is Vondel Park - rather large & a cool place to hang out & relax with interesting people coming & going. A rent-a-bike is a great option ... just follow other cyclists & try & find your way back - always interesting or just forget time in the haze of a coffeeshop ......

When you walk out of the train station there is a tourist office. In there you can get some free books with all the stuff going on there those days. I sugest you cross the street into the red light district and just go from there.

You know, my hostel is like 10 minutes walk from the RLD and train station. How convenient is that!

Hi Lucky,
A'dam is great, although for a short 3 day stay at "non-summer time" you'll miss out on the great outdoor/street atmosphere.
A couple of suggestions from me if you have the time...from Central Station, if you go left towareds the Red Lights, catch the "Zee Dijk". Follow it about 5-9 minutes. On the left site, there's a Thai Snackbar called "Blue Bird". It's very small, but they got the best Thai food I ever got in Holland. Last time I've been there a smiling Thai cook flamed up the Wok towards the ceiling (They also have a restaurant on the right site with the same name, don't go there, it's not the same experience and expensive).
If you continue on that street, you end up on the Nieuwe Markt. Well, at summer times there's a lot to spot. In August I've spend a great day just sitting on a terrasse with my beer & Jack coke watching the craziest ppl passing by on that square. I'll attach some pic's where a guy jumps on a pick-up ... followed by the police to rescue the driver and a Blues band with their cadillac crousing around for their next gig.
If you only have 3 day's, I would strongly recommend to just go with the flow, forget about all the obvious tourist attractions. Enjoy the great architecture, it's amazing how some of the very old houses around the canals still haven't fallen apart.
As of the traditional smoking habbits in A'dam, I agree with LivingLOS, it's very strong stuff there since aggressively grown in green houses with very strong light. So, better don't mix it up with a drink other than Thee, Coffee or Orange Juice. I gave up on it long time ago.
There's also a great Surinam Restaurant at the end of the Warmoe Straat (RDL district) called Kam Yin. It's packed with Surinam ppl, which only proves the great food they have. It's also very in-expensive. I always to there if I have the chance ! Stongly recommended.
Try to get to a district called "De Jordan". It's one of the oldest districts and close to the Anne Frank House. I've lived there for a year. It's truely very much "original amsterdam", relaxed cafe's and markets (at Lindegracht).
As you said, maybe you have no time to go party. But in case you want to, try the Eye Party's at Marcanti Plaza followed by a after hour party at Dino's at the harbour, it's open until 2-3 in the afternoon. At least it has been for a long time...
Have fun

Amsterdam is nice. I love the beer here. To be honest, I really didn't do much except find as many interesting pubs as I can and check out the Van Gogh museum.
I flew in on Saturday and apparently quite a few tourists are here for the Cannabis Cup. Not realy my thing but that didn't stop me form having a smoke or two. Thanks all for the advice. I did go to Banana Club and the RLD and I was amazed at the number of beautiful girls there. I din't partake in the festivities but it was just a fun time looking.
I'm glad really that tonight is my last night because I've been on a drunken stupor since I got here. I just can't wait to lay out on the beach and really relax.

First of all sorry guys, as I discovered this thread way too late. About Amsterdam many valid things have been mentioned already. When I take business relations to Amsterdam (usually one day) a couple of fixed program items are: Canal boat tour, walk around the "Bagijnhof" a nice place of tranquility in the heart of the city, Eat hering for lunch, as most foreigners seems to like that. Visit one or two museums. Make a stadium tour at the Amsterdam Arena. Watch the people from a terrace at the Rembrandtsplein while having a drink. Go for dinner somewhere and to close off the day by a walking tour through the RLD.
Read some guys also mentioning The Hague. That's good, because as a The Hague resident, I can tell that my city has some nice things on offer.
You can visit the parliament buidlings where they have daily tours. The International Court of Justice, Madurodam miniature city, The Mesdag and Escher museums, The Royal Palaces, the beaches at Scheveningen or Kijkduin.
Also, there is a wide variety of restaurants. Most popular is the Indonesian kitchen. There are lots of them from very simple to really classy.
And should you really start missing the Thai beauties..... there are about 8 or 9 Thai massage parlours in town. Some are good ones. The average price for one hour with b2b and HJ will cost you on average € 65 (2800 baht) for one hour. Some girls may offer you boomboom too, but then the price doubles. This is the standard way they do in most of these places.
If you need more info, just let me know.
