traveling in the US.....
....is a fcuking joke these days
checking baggage-just waited almost an hour in a not so busy airport for my bags. and it always happens. i always choose to slide up to the jerk and charge and let them know i've been in many 3rd world countries and they are much more effecient than people here and that it all comes down to laziness, plain and simple
security-going through, wearing a suit. ok, no problem, take my suit jacket and neatly fold it in the bin. the fat puerto rican girl just crumples it and leaves it in a heap. i have to wait for extra screening. ok, no problem, but the guy speaks to me like im a retarded 5 year old, which i tell him hes rude
now the kicker, kid comes over to do the extra screening, takes my shoes and puts them right on my suit jacket, and thats when i flipped. just ignorant bastards.
i am not bringing check-in baggage for now on. buying a nice garment bag to carry on for my suits and a small bag

Even transit through the USA is a nightmare. People have to get their luggage off the incoming flight and then re-check it all through on to the on-going flight.
I was looking at flights to the Carribean from the UK and have decided that I would not book anything that goes through the USA.

well, compared to what i saw one guy go through last night at immigration at 130am
just the questions they were askign him were absurd!!
she asks him how much he has in bank, guy says 30k
she then asks if we go to ATM , he can get 30k!!!
no one can
i understand when traveling to foreign countries the onus is on us to show proof of taking care of yourself, but that was ridiculous
then she asks about his job, hes an editor for tv/movies
asks if he went to school, says no, then grills him why he doesnt need an education
anyways, i understand they are there to protect, but they all overstep their authority
i was there for almost 2 hours to get dnied my work permit in what the girl couldve done in 10 minutes

The best question I have ever been asked at US immigration was "Are you, or have you ever been, a member of a terrorist organisation?"
What is the point of that? But then im sure there is some reason........ like if you twitch or spurt out yes you my be arrested and get given a nice orange boiler suit and a holiday in Cuba.

Hi Paul,
Nothing at any airport surprises me anymore these days.
At the very point you enter "their" premises, you're no more worth than one sheep out of thousands.
It's your choice to travel by plane, well, then you have to be prepared to go with the flow. Any other expectations will just stress you...bring time and a good bit of "mai pen rai" where every you go, get on the plane and all is good. You have no other choice, face it. Still better than going by boat ;-)
Have a great new year !

This problem is generally airline specific. I travel with Delta to Hartford all the time and when I do check luggage the wait is long. In other airports the same airline does great.

I agree with you, the screening personal do not have any appreciation for personal property. I always use multiple bins, knowing that TSA does not want computers an other items together and I don't want my shoes with other clothing. Generally I use 3 to 4 bins.

I am with you there, fortunately US carriers have a pretty liberal allowance for carry-on

I would have literally flipped at the first one..
I just react very badly with authority especially when its some jumped up twat with none really (Thailand guys with whistles !!!).. The thing is I so rarely get hassled in this way, makes me wonder if its vibes you put out (not saying its someone's fault) or demeanour or something ??
I am not great with crowds and things but I really dont have a problem with being processed and doing thier safety jobs.. Thats cool with me.. but questions like the above I cant bite my tongue. What do you think would happen if you told them 'none of your goddam business' as that would probably have been out of my mouth before I could stop it.

I think being a security guy is a miserable job.
As always, misery likes company!

I've gotten to the point where if I can drive there in a day, then I drive rather than fly. That's my rule now. Single male travelling alone gets the most scrutiny too of course. I tend to wear shorts and a smart shirt with sandals only. Of course, this is hard to do in the winter.
I feel the same frustration though... and the people at the TSA must have been bullied most of their lives and now they are bullying back. The more frustrated you get, the higher level of screening they award you....

You are most certainly not made welcome there by the immigration staff.
I remember a long time ago being given the visa waiver forms to fill in when we landed in Florida, whilst still on the aircraft.
It was made very clear that any mistakes on the form would be big problems at immigration
Why can't these people at immigration the world over just be a bit more friendly? Is that too much to ask.

just flew this weekend and had very few problems surprisingly. still have to take off my shoes and everything out of my pockets but actually went through pretty quickly.
The first time I flew when TSA started had a guy who was on a big power trip. Lady in front of me went through x ray, a minute later I go through, no beeps, no problems, guy says "I did not tell you to go through" in a really nasty way. I asked him how much longer he wanted me to stand there after the mother and baby went through. Guy actually threatened me with getting me kicked off of the plane. So just sat there and took it.
Since I still had 2 hours before my flight I went and found his supervisor. I had remembered the guys name and made a formal complaint against him. The supervisor took me back over to the TSA check in, got the guy to apologise to me, took my information, and he was formally reprimanded and I was actually sent a copy of the reprimand letter.
I know they have a job to do but they can at least be nice and friendly while doing their job.
My last 5 trips to Asia, I have been really lucky in that the head of the TSA international departure check in is a friend of my ex GF and remembered me so there were never any problems there when he has been there.
Part of the problem is that some of the TSA people have never had a job where they had any authority and now that they do they do not know how to handle it.

When I think about it, the only place I have been given any real problems entering was in Vancouver.

I get stopped at Immigrations at Airports all the time. Ask me lots of questions, i just answer and smile then leave.
Sometimes it just suxs when i have to remove my belt and the pants feels like it's gonna drop.
Just got to live with it, especially those who travel a lot either for work or play.
I seldom travel to US, only twice a year. The last one was to UK and it was a nightmare for me also.
