Shocking Phone Call: Your House is on Fire!

Today, I received a shocking phone call from a volunteer fire fighter in town stating the department was on their way to my new house, which I am currently building. The neighbor had reported it on fire.

This house is my pride, joy and dream. I have been building it over the past 2+ years and in 2 months I should be at move in state.

I drove down there (breaking most traffic laws) fearing a four story inferno. When I arrived there wasn't even any smoke. Turns out that it was the kerosene that I used as a heating oil substitute caused a large plume of black smoke and since the flu is on the side of the house it looked like a fire.

Needless to say I feel quite relieved now after that ordeal. It is like having the worst and best day all at the same time.
How good or bad was you day?

Sorry to hear about the MrDK. Being a home owner myself I can certainly understand the anxiety that might cause.

The amount of times me and my brother have been ambulanced about when younger.. No wonder my parents have grey hair.

How come I lost my hair??? to date the boys have never had one serious accident, neither of them have had aserious scrap, never had a fire or major problem with the house. This means one of two things either I'm building up a really big deficit account with the big man upstairs and am going to get a whole lot of problems all at the same time soon or maybe I am the 'chosen one'.

Wish I had never typed this now as think I might be tempting fate too much!!!

It's nice to know your new neighbours are on the ball and called the Fire Brigade for you, fire or no fire!

Best you get them round for a BBQ when you eventually move in at the new place.................Not too close to the house mind!

It is nice when neighbours do step in.
In the winter time we can actually see from one neighbour to another, but in the summer time it is a bit tough.

I don't know what I would have done had there actually been a fire. I have spent nearly every weekend for the past 28 month building this house and have a lot of sweat equity in it. Not having any children, this is my baby.

Nice to hear your house escaped undamaged....

I think firemen, doctors and even cops are the unsung heroes.
My best friends father is a part-time fire man for the last 25+ years(Too small a place for full time).
I live in area where everyone knows each other so when he gets called out the chances are he knows them. Car crashes seem to be the main killer around here followed by fires.
He told me that garenteed every year as he sits down for xmas dinner and his pager will go off for another emergency...I asked him why he does it and he says "if i can save at least one life in my career it will have been worth it".
Last time i spoke with him in his house was the day after his niece was killed in a crash. He was 1st on the scene..She was cut in half..The guy was in tears asking me awkward questions that i could not answer....Next day i seen him he was pefectly normal as if nothing had happened...
He is always asking me to join but i could never do it....Imagine getting a call to a fire or a crash and finding one of your loved ones in pieces.

These guys have my upmost respect....(+more)...
