Leaping Lizzards!
I about stepped on this guy in the vacant lot next to my house. He's about 1 1/2 feet long. Not sure what kind it is.

Wow that is a beauty, only seen one monitor since living here and was about same size. Someone asked me the other day, what predators do they have in Thailand, tigers but rare to see, snakes, crocs and these lizards couldn't think of anymore (unless thinking of large spiders and scorpions), not many when you consider all the prey animals and couldn't think of anymore that were warm blooded.

Wow what a coincidence, read this thread then had to pop out to take Gee to Carrefour shopping, as we went throught the village crossing the road was a huge monitor lizard, first one i've seen since living here. Carried on up Smugglers Hill and then across the road came a cobra, is it the time of year or something?
Pretty good, got a small bottle of milk off the lizard and a quick tang soo doo lesson off the snake!!!

5555555 You should have come to the Snake show with us Paul.
There were my two kids struggling to hold this huge constrictor between them (it was a big rascal) and this huge US guy next to us was squirming.
I could see the Thai guy had seen this, and brought the snake up to him to hold it. No way!, so he wrapped the end of its body around the guys ankle and he squealed like a girl 555555555.
I have pics, but not digital, my battery failed me that day
Sorry if that seems insensitive to the guys fears, but my kids weren't too keen yet still went and tried it. (Yes so did I)

A 5ish foot one made its home right at the entrance to my villa.. Imagine being confronted with that staggering drunk at 5 in the morning.. Big bloody hooded thing !!
I got one of the house workers to kill it for me.. Have the pics somewhere..

A few years ago a snake got itself entangled in the deer net fence in our back yard. It was about 6 feet long. Not knowing what kind of snake it was my wife and I decided to tackle the matter anyway. The head was firmly stuck in the netting to initially it could do nothing. My wife held the snake while I cut the fence netting with a knife. When we got to the last couple of cut it became a little nerve wrecking as I would be cutting the last constraint and she would be holding the 6 foot snake. Last cut was made and she threw it as far as she could.
Turned out it was a garden snake which is not poisonous.

I love snakes and used to keep a few Garter snakes in the UK.
We had quite a few cobras and other snakes up on the hill in Surin Beach. The Cobras we had to kill as you just can't risk having them hidden away on your property, it's a shame but there is no one hereto take them away (thais would probably eat them anyway)!

Thais don't mess around when it comes to killing a cobra. Can't blame them.
Saw a huge 2.5m long (as long as a road is wide) at the bottom of the hill going from karon to patong. Stopped traffic. I just drove around.
Once saw some sort of tiger on the way from Kata to Rawai along that dark forest stretch of road. It was big like a large dog but looked like and moved like a cat. Yellowish color. Moved so fast I didn't get a good look. Was on the bike that time so I didn't stick around.

Monitor Lizard

That was a small Monitor lizard.Sometimes on the Hash trails we get sightings of them. The are very fast runners and a good photo like yours is hard to get.
There are Cobras all over the forested area of the island Marc, including Golf Courses. They generally give humans a wide berth unless cornered.Out on the trails they will just move away provided you don't spook them. All the hospitals here carry the anti venoms.
Denver - you on Safari again.

We have Monitor Lizards over here as well (known as "Race Horse Goannas to some) and they may look appealing to some folks, but when you see one disappear up a dead cows ar$e on the side of the road, they lose their appeal real fast!!!!!!!
