Terrorist attack
Sorry if this is on the wrong board feel free to move.
A 4 wheel Cherokee truck has been driven into Glasgow Airport main terminal and the 2 people inside then set about to set it on fire. Apparently 2 vehicles collided and 1 went on fire the people involved then fought with cab drivers and police. This is the second attack in Britain in 3 days looks like we are in for a new wave of attacks.

The best thing is reports saying that one of the Terrorists was given a good kicking from the locals and another was knocked unconcious by another guy.

Good to know you are all ok. I was through there on Wednesday having a moan about the security checks but this just shows you can never be too carefull.

Quite alarming.
Car-bomb suicide attacks would represent a scary 'new frontier' for terrorism in the West.
This attack looks decidely amateurish too, and the early reports suggest that the car was packed 'only' with fuel and gas cyclinders, which are readily avalable materials.

Hate to say it but fuel and gaz (usually seeded with nails) can make nasty IED's.. Making bombs and explosives doesnt need to be too complex..
Any highly oxidizing combustible (weedkiller, fertilizer, etc) can be improvised..

I agree.
But the intelligence agencies are aware of this too, so let's hope they continue to get good intell and get in early.

Gasoline in itself is a poor choice for a bomb, but a great choice for a fire. Only gasoline gases and vapors (airborne) are combustible, the liquid is not. While the point where gas/vapor become combustibe (LEL) is fairly low ~1.5%/vol; the point where the gas/vapor mix is too rich to burn is also fairly low - <8%/vol.
In the case of one of the two Mercedes cars spotted outside a nightclub with smoke in the cab. What was actually spotted was the gasoline vaporising and likely after a short period of time the concentration will have reached UEL (Upper Explosive Limit). Once the concentration has exceed the UEL a source of ignition will not start the chain reaction, known as an explosion. At this point either a dilution or an oxidizing agent would be required (Chlorine would be good) to facilitate a combustion. The volume of the cab will limit the magnitude of the explosion.
If the setup in the Glasgow attack was similar to what was described from London, the incident more or less showed what I described above. Small explosion, big fire. As LiL mentioned agents such as ammonia based fertilizer is much more powerful. Remember Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 by Timothy McVeigh.

When I was a kid I had the pyro phase and being a bit extra geeky got interested in combustibles.. Sodium chlorate weedkiller with soot (carbon) and sugar was one of my specials.. Problem was creating suitable triggers and compression.
In fact if you experiment.. Even humble petrol and washing up liquid in a molatov.. Shake the shit out of it so the petrol vapor is trapped in the bubbles created by the soap.. Use much less petrol than you would imagine (1/4 to 1/3 the volume to allow more air).. If you got those just right they would properly 'pop' when combusting.
My poor parents !!

We used to experiment with saltpeter (the ammonia-chloride giving the flavor in black deaths) and sugar. Very difficult to ignite (sulfur would do). It wasn't explosive, but would create more smoke than you can imagine. Using about 10kg we once had town square covered in smoke. No damage, non-toxic but gets attention.

I have to try that. In my work we experiment a lot with ignition and combustion, after all the detection and prevention of combustion is an essential part of how we make money. I would actually think that a much smaller ratio would so. Gives me a way to entertain the neighbors kids over 4th of July.

was reported in Aus yesterday that indeed the "bombs" were full of nails and the second one was timed to go off just after the first to hit emergency workers/rescuers etc

This is terrorism at its most basic. How can this sort of backyard terrorism be controlled. And early test for mr Brown.
Some reprots filtering through that US agencies were made aware of a possible attack in Glasgow, yet chose not to share this information??

Very difficult when it was revealed today that two of the suspects are a Iranian and Iraqi doctor working in British hospitals. More suspects arrested today. There are some more reports here.

Attack Of The Killer Clowns
Time to step back and take a non-hysterical look at this recent "attack."

And if Iran or someone else were to "lose" a little of their enriched Uranium 235 and those "killer clowns," or their Al-Quada cronies were to get their hands on it, construct a bomb, and successfully detonate it in a Western city, it won't be so funny then! All hell will break loose!!
