What is Semi Formal Attire?

In the good old days (when the British Empire was in control in Asia) semi formal evening wear was called 'Planters.'

It consists of long trousers,a long slieved shirt and a tie,shoes - not sandals.

Yanks just can't dress themselves for anything.
