What is Semi Formal Attire?
Got an invitation to a dinner event from my American friend.
On the invitation card, it's written semi formal attire.
How do i wear semi formal?
Thank you.

If it is important to dress just the right way, ask the sender of the invitation.
Without further information I would think, at a minimum, slacks and long sleeve shirt. It could mean a tie as well. The exact interpretation would also depend on where in the world the event takes place. In SE Asia tie is not likely to be required, however, in America I would read semi formal as including a tie.

Thank you for the reply. The event will be held in KL in a 5 star restaurant.
I got this from askmen.com -
Semi-formal: A nice dress shirt with an optional tie, good quality chinos or trousers, and a sports coat is highly recommended.
Similar to what you said, i guess it should be safe to wear like that.
Cheers.

If you are going to be indoors dress shirt and a coat with no tie not only meets the expectations, but is smart attire too.

If your event is in KL i certainly wouldn't bother with a Sports Jacket. Having lived in Sg for 3 years i can vouch i never saw a Sports Jacket only a suit jacket which is immediately removed on entering the office...
For KL, i'd opt for Trousers, long/short sleeve dress shirt, smart shoes. A tie will definately NOT be required for semi-formal in KL...

Oh there is a difference between a sports jacket and a normal work suit? I only wear suits to really formal events.

Basically a work suit comprises of jacket, trousers and sometimes waistcoat all made of the same piece of material...... a SJ is a one off jacket sometimes made of Twede (in the old days) or generally a thicker material that is of different colour and appearance to the trousers its worn with. As i said certainly unheard of in Asia as far as i have witnessed

Trousers and long-sleeve shirt.
If I had to wear a suit every day in Singapore/KL I think I would expire. It is bad enough here, and we only have 2-3 months of hot weather.

Semi Final Wear??? hmmm!!
I think it is what ENGLAND, France, Argentina and SA are experiencing now, but poor Australia, NZ & Scotland are not.
Not 100% certain on that one, just my thought of the day!!!

Semi-formal attire means:
Full Suit: Jacket, Tie, Button-Down Shirt and Matching slacks.
(Vest optional).

I just go by the feel I have about the meeting. In Europe I would opt for a light (sport) jacket or a blazer.

But that is not semi-formal. His invitation said "semi-formal," which means a full suit, tie, and dress shirt(vest optional). A blazer or sport jacket is not semi-formal attire.

Yaiks, 2 different styles for semi formal.
Yeah, if wearing a full suit is semi formal, then what is formal?
I asked some of the other friends who are also going to the dinner, they said just wear long sleeve shirt and long pants.

I went to a Chinese wedding celebration in Singapore for the 10 course dinner evening. The attire for the evening was semi-formal and most people were wearing trousers, long/short sleeve dress shirt and shoes, i think this should suffice for your evening also Mr. Naut

formal attire = dinner suit/tuxedo or tails depending on the hour/occasion
semi formal = lounge/business suit with lon
may differ in KL but if the invitation comes from an English speaking/mannered person lounge suit will probably be expected

No probs......I only know because I have to go to so many bloody opennings/events for my work
dinner suit/tuxedo is black pants with black satin stripe detail on the outside seams of the trousers + black suit jacket with black satin detail on lapels worn with black bow tie and white dress shirt (french cuffs with studs or cuff links for "black tie" events.......otherwise a straight black tie can be worn......
It is acceptable to alternate an all white/cream jacket + tie for the al black version for events which start in daylight hours but in the US this seems to be OK for all hours
Business/lounge suit can be any colour but normally in the darker colours....... black/charcoal/navy and can be worn with your own choice of shirt + tie.....I find these days a tie is even optional here in NZ/Aus provided the shirt/knit is suitable.....
