Why on earth would this be of any interest to forum members?

Yeah, make her feel special....a routine beating is no way to say "I love you"

No I haven't, although I'm well aware Arabs from most Middle Eastern countries visit LOS, especially during their extremely hot summers.
So are you saying that all these couples from Saudi are taking notice of this crackpot author and cleric? I doubt it, and how does the fact of this "news" affect BM's? I just don't see it. And what if Saudis do visit Phuket?
As long as they behave themselves, same as any other race, what is the problem?

Refocus
It appears that someone is missing the point of multiculturalism...
How this concerns BMs: One way is the Islamic unrest in the South. As I posted before it could metastasize northward. And there is no live-and-let-live option here... either we defeat this thought-process, submit, or die.
So I see a real connection to the LOS.

Capt, I live in possibly one of the most multicultural countries in the world, and I understand it.
I disagree totally with your view that this "news" will affect anything that happens in the south of Thailand.
I don't have the time right now, or the inclination to discuss it further though.
My final post on the subject.

If cultures are going to bump into each other I think it helps if we understand something about each other.
Crackpot? I've read the article several times and he appears to be advocating moderation of what appears to be acceptable behaviour in that culture - stay calm when beating her appears to be the message in one part of the article.
I found the article to be an insight. I don't agree with aspects of their culture but it is their culture.
I have never worked in the Middle East and have only passed thru other Islamic countries but it seems that animal, wife and child beating is not unlawful - the man's right to maintain his household as he sees fit etc.
Would you advocate intervening if you witnessed an arab disciplining his wife outside your hotel room door? Would you feel you must say something if he struck her only once? Damned if I know what I'd do.

I agree. The thread is in idle cit chat section, so what's the problem?

Actually, animal, wife, and child beating was quite acceptable in Western countries not so long ago. I can remember as a small boy, listening to the neighbor on either side of my house beating their wives. It was only on rare occasions. Beating children, OTOH, was quite common, and on any given summer night, if you strolled around the neighborhood, you may or may not hear someone beating their child. It was the old, "Spare the rod, spoil the child" philosophy of child-rearing, and was accepted by many, if not most. As far as beating animals, that is still pretty much up to an individual's discretion.

Unless I thought her life was in jeopardy, or very serious injury, absolutely not, other than verbally harassing the guy. I've seen too many times when a drunk guy was hitting his drunk wife, someone intervened , and then both the husband and the wife turned on him. No good deed goes unpunished.

I'm on Dawseys track reading this.
True, JB, it's in the chit chat section, anything can be posted.
On the other site, the opening of the OP...:
One simply must follow protocol in all matters of the heart....
...is kind of a statement thrown up the air, lay back and see where it lands.
There's absolutely no correlation to Thailand ... and I doubt that anyone would even like to bring up a comparisson of Arabs when it comes to womans treatment.
Anyway, I'm on my way tomorrow again for 4 more lovely days of duty in Riyadh ... get the cold Starbucks coffees ready :-)

As I understand it, the idle chit chat section is reserved for matters which have no "correlation" to Thailand, such as World Series, Cricket, Rugby, the latest movie you've seen or book you've read, a funny or unfunny joke, games, and riddles, celebrity gossip, or whatever strikes your fancy. If it is about Thailand, then why would it be in the Idle chit chat section?

True, no objectives at all, it's a chit chat thread, going for anything.
Just wanted to throw in my 2cents to the follow up response of the OP stating there is a correlation to Thailand in the posted article.
I don't know too much about the South of Thailand as such, but it would really surprise me if it has anything to do what you can read in the link.
Or do you see that?

Dr Abdullah is correct of course...why would you pay good money for a wife and then go and spoil it all by disfiguring her face with a beating...just doesnt make sense....
On a more serious note, have any of you seen some of these women unveiled?
Seen plenty on Suk but in KL they seem to show their faces more ( more relaxed??) and some of them a simply stunning....For some reason I had always imagined them to be terribly ugly under there but lots are mixed race and a couple almost made me trip over...

Trouble is that this is posted in a We(West)= civilised smashing chaps and They(Arabs/anyone of Mid East extraction)= barbaric primitives. It's a subjective piece gathered by someone who clearly has a polarised opinion and presented to us as indisputable fact.
I've not spent any portion of my life at all with Mid Eastern people, so I'm not trying to vouch for them all, but they can't all be murderous wife beaters can they? I know that there are some guys here who have spent time in the Mid East, but even they can't have met them all.
To the OP Capt. Fantastic I would say this. Mississippi Burning was on the TV again last night, would it be fair of the rest of the world to assume that the way (black) people were/are treated in the deep south of America is representative of the general mentality of the population of your country?

Can't comment since I do not own a TV. But I can say concerning the productions (both TV and movie) in which I have been involved, facts are irrelevant. The show "Las Vegas" has so much, er, BS from a casino perspective it can only be considered entertainment. Which in fact it is. So take media representations with a (serious) grain of salt.
Regarding Mai Chob's observation about stunning, unveiled Middle Eastern femmes: bingo! I suspect it has something to do with protecting their skin and hair from the sun, &c. Note, however, that I personally consider Persian women to be the most beautiful in the world. Dark (dark, dark...) eyes, prominent cheekbones, sultry voices.
And, for the record, I have spent many years in the Middle East.
