I have had several customs officers start shooting the sh*t about diving after they asked where I was and what I was doing. They didn't care about the line behind me. I never go to a female immigration officer anymore (if I can help it) as they just don't understand the 7 LOS stamps in my passport and couldn't give a dam about diving.

Just curious, is it normal for customs in your country to ask about where you have been and what you were doing regardless of where you have been, or it only when you have come home from LOS?
I always travel via Singapore as i like a day or 2 of variety before i come home and it shortens the trip a bit as well, so when i arrive home i am arriving from Singapore and all i get is a "good morning sir" they scan my passport, check my arrival card and a "have a nice day" and i'm on my way.
My mate however, travels direct from LOS and always gets the 3rd degree. "where did you visit, what did you do, do you have a Thai girlfriend, you visit Thailand a lot" etc etc. Just wondering if it is LOS thing?

for me, i think Canada asks the most questions out of any country i have ever been to
as for LOS, there is still a stigma of child prostitution associated with the country, so u will get the questions some times, i guess

Most of the time I transit through either LAX or SFO and have to deal with the US immigration officer and Canadian officers on the same trip who ask the same questions. Yea they always ask what you have been up to. LAX has to be the most intrusive location to transit through. No point taking it personally...just answer the questions and move on.

Even though I have nothing to hide, going through customs is one of the things I hate most about traveling. Get all nervous that there will be an issue that you are unaware of etc.
Hopefully don't miss my connecting flight at JFK during my return in April due to customs taking too long. In Chicago they just look at your declaration card(or whatever it is called) and seemed to pick some people out from that, but moved quite quickly.

It really sucks after a long flight to be given an attitude when you return home. I know it's their job and their demeanor in designed to scare any one from bringing in resticted items. But it's the last thing I need after a fun but exhausting trip. Wouldn't it be great to be greeted with a cold beer, a snack and a back rub. Welcome home Dupree! We missed you so.5555555

I agree but I don't read too much into it...
Singapore is Singapore and Thailand is everything else...
The OZ arrival card asks in what country you spent most of your time abroad - if I write Thailand I do tend to get more of a going over - at least verbally. Aussie customs know that you can buy just about anything in Thailand and that its quarantine standards are lower than say Singapore so they give you a more thorough going over looking for things like those electrified fly swats or any food stuffs - just doing their job. Enjoy.

I've had 10 trips now 9/10 of em arriving back in Syd. from Singapore.
As Minder says, I always put Thailand as the country as most time spent abroad.
They only have to open your passport to see if you're tellin the truth or not.
I was searched once & that was solely brought upon by myself, by declaring I had a weapon in my baggage.
I'd purchased one of those novelty H-D lighters which is the turbo gas type & it had a flick knife fitted into it, about a 2" blade.
I thought it best to declare it, as I didn't want it showing up in x-rays etc.
I got to the "anything to declare section" & explained to the guy what I had.
Upon talking to him & explaining I collect H-D stuff & it's more of a novelty item & not a "real" weapon as such, he gave me an inclination, things would be ok, but he wanted to look at it first.
I had purchased about 6 of those novelty lighters & upon checking my bag, only 5 were left & the flick knife one was missing.
I had them in a zippered section in the end of my sports bag (check-in luggage)
Anyways, this guy thought it may have been some kinda bluff, cos it was missing etc......(anything to declare baggage does not get x-rayed)
He turned from Mr Nice Guy into Mr Attitude within 5 mins....He was asking me irrelevant questions..like.. do ya have a gf in Thailand, do ya have a gf at home, I see ya have kids clothing..blah blah blah.....He was kissing me whilst trying to fcuk me..55555555
Needless to say....his search found nothing outta the ordinary.
A few weeks ago when I returned, I had a female customs officer approach me at the baggage carousel...she asked where I'd been..told her PI & LOS, she asked for my immigration card & then marked something on it with her pen & pointed out to me, to go to the " anything to declare isle" ....I kept quiet & thought to myself...WTF...HERE WE GO AGAIN.
I got my bags & headed to the ATD section...they asked for my immigration card & then shooed me through.....I said, hey what's this, no x-rays?....The officer said, if ya want you can go & line up & have em done....I said nah mate, all is good, have a good day..Cheers.

Goong I have gone in and out of Perth 4 time to LOS and every time I get back have got the third degree. My passport only has trips in and out of LOS plus one now to the UK. Never happened when I got back from England.
It really pisses me off, last time it happened I told the old bag behind the counter every where I had been and then after I finsished I asked her if she had ever been to or knew any of the places I had been to. She said no on both counts, so then I said to her why the hell did you bother asking. Should have seen the black look on her face after I said that.
I am not really looking forward to my next trip through Perth Customs, but was worth it to see the look on her face.

From the replies above, it would appear that there is a bit of a trend regards extra attention from the customs crew if you have been to LOS. Jealous prick$.
And WTF is the question "do you have a Thai girlfriend" all about? I can understand them asking about visits to rural areas due to bird flu and other diseases etc, but what is the relevance to national security of having a Thai girlfriend?
In fact, the insinuation in the questioning easyrider_au copped borders on character abuse. I really don't know how i will handle a situation like that if i'm ever confronted with it.

well, lets see if this ever happened to you!!
so i have know my friend Bobby for about 16 years
he has a pretty decent plumbing/contracting business but was short of liquid cash. going through a messy divorce and all
we agreed id lend him 20k usd to buy some equipment and get back 25k in 6-8 months
totally legit guy and never a worry
thing is i sent him 4 checks of 5k usd each. but i made them out to cash so that his assitan tor secretary could cash them if need be. but i didnt out the cash in my checking account juts in case the over-night got lost
well, it doesnt show up, i wait a couple days and go to put a stop on the checks and the US Customs actually cashed my checks
basically, it is illegal to send a check written to cash in the mail
so they basically seized the money and my friend would have to go pick it up
well, i called Customs because i didnt want to be on some list or something
i have to say, i was expecting them to grill me and be nasty but they were pretty cool and nice about explaining everything to me

They are more interested in what government department I work for than where I've been or what I might have.
Last time i declared something they didn't even want a look. Medication showed up on an X-ray before and he grabbed one box and saw it labelled correctly and off I went. They didn't look deep enough to find the Cialis I had left over.

Never had a problem with customs anywhere but I did experience an absolute gem from immigration at Zaventem (Brussels) in 2001. I'd been living in Brussels since '99 and arrived back from a trip to France and presented my Belgian ID card to immigration (counts as a pasport in EU (not UK) and has my picture, home address etc) and the guy says to me: "so, what is the purpose of your trip to Belgium?"

when i landed in stockholm in feb this year coming from thailand i had no trouble with customs but upon arriving in oslo later that day and getting pulled over by a young customs woman asking me where i came from. me being a dumb ass tells her the truth that i changed planes in stockholm and had originally come from thailand i get the 3rd degree by her after that and an xray off my luggage, she was looking it over in the xray machine for 5 mins i just asked her if she wanted me to open the luggage so she could go thru it by hand instead. oh well good thing i had plenty of time on my hand until my connecting plane were due to leave
