A pretty good actor in his day. In the classic movie "Easy Rider," Peter Fonda wrote the part that made an unknown actor(Jack Nicholson) into an overnight star, for Rip Torn, who was already quite well known. Torn agreed to do it , but then, at the last moment, when equipment and personnel had already arrived on location for the first shoot, he wanted them to postpone shooting while he took another role on Broadway(IIRC). Fonda couldn't wait. Nicholson was actually one of the production guys, in charge of moving equipment and lining up locations for shoots. They were sitting around going, "What the hell are we going to do?" when someone said, "How about you, Jack? You have acting experience, don't you?" Nicholson had pretty much moved on from an acting career to production because it was steady work and he was good at it. But it didn't take much egging on, before he got that funny look in his eyes, smiled his crazy smile, and said, "Sure, why not? The show must go on!!" If Torn had not have screwed over Peter Fonda, then Jack would never have got that role, which, though written for Torn, turned out to be the perfect role for Nicholson, and Jack would be remembered only by a few trivia buffs who could answer the question, "Who had the lead role in the cult classic, 'Hell's Angels on Wheels'? which had been Jack's dubious claim to game prior to "Easy Rider." Poor Rip Torn never really recovered from that fateful blunder, but he was a very good actor in his day. I wonder if Nicholson ever thanked him!
