interaction with muslims
now, i am not generalizing, just going by a few interactions i have had with Muslims when by the pool in Bangkok
yesterday, i go down to the pool and grab a chair and put my towel, books, and shirt down and jump in the pool
a little bit after, a teenage muslim girl came down with a bunch of little boys. she went right to my chair. i told her it was my chair, but she motioned politely if she could put my stuff on table next to it and sit with some little kids
i said sure
so after a bit, i get out of pool to retrieve my belongings and move to another chair so she can keep that chair. she looked like i was going to rape her!! i mean, did she expect me to magically move my belongings with my eyes?
just weird people
also, i will say, some of the young muslim boys i meet while in the pool(that doesnt sound good 555) are some of the most engaging young kids. super polite. but then i see their dads and older brothers and they have a constant scowl on their face

I suppose it largely depends on where they are from and what sort of religious environment that they come from.
There is a huge Muslim population where I live, mostly descendants of the Malay slaves who were brought to Southern Africa in the 1700’s.
I work with a number of Muslims and they range from the ultra conservative to very relaxed in their thinking and ways.
Like Christianity there seems to be varying interpretations of the Koran amongst sects and they follow accordingly.
So I think it is hard to generalize. I am fortunate that most of the Muslims that I work with are pretty relaxed and good people.

Paul,
Isn't this the second or third time you have book yourself into Muslim lodging?

I think it is hard to generalise when it comes to religion.... Because they are from different countries and also have different upbringings... Im not just talking about Muslims also many other religions...
They all practise it differently(extreme to just a little).... I am Muslim, and proud to say i am as anyone should about their religion This is my perfect example... My parents dont practise our religion, i mean i dont pray 5 times a day and i do drink and do pretty much everything that i shouldnt be doing. They were born in Turkey but came to Australia at a very young age and have adapted to the western culture as much as an aussie family that were born here.
I sometimes hold back from telling people my religion unless im asked because i dont want them to judge me. Some not all, seem to judge us the same as the terrorists that are out there, i am not saying you marc26 so dont take it the wrong way..
I think its the way they are brought up by their family, they are probably not used to interacting with strangers or people from other countries that is probably why it seemed so strange to you.. Also i think maybe because everyone is so friendly in LOS and its so easy to turn and talk to the person next to you.....I can understand why it seemed so weird....
Anyway, we are all human and should be all looked at equally putting aside the religion, race, colour and all other aspects that seperate us from each other....
Just my to cents... sorry didnt mean to ramble on......
Good TR by the way Marc26, enjoyed the read mate.....

You post here about getting into fights with people, you talk about some Thai group as "pieces of shit" and now we hear your thoughts on Muslims.
I am just dying to know what you think about Jews, blacks and aboriginals......not.
Perhaps it is just you, did you ever consider that?

I agree that some Moslems do have strange mentality, especially the ones from middle east. Recently I was watching TV show about Islamic architecture and among other places they showed Samarqand in Uzbekistan. Naturally it was interesting to see the place and the street scenes including the local markets. Now, I know a lady who lives in Samarqand...so when I was talking to her I told her about the show. She said (she is not Moslem) "it's easy for you sitting in your lounge room and watching it on your TV, but it is another thing to actually live here and having to put with this stupid Arab mentality". I think that she was referring to the endemic corruption problems where you need to constantly grease someones palm in order to get things done. Another weird thing (according to her) is the rich Arabs staying in 5 star hotels in BKK, paying top dollar per night and then going to the street stalls and bargaining for measly few bucks when buying clothes to take back home. Then again, I guess that is the national psyche...need to haggle?

I have Muslim friends, but i only go out with them because they talk sense. I know of many who are so arrogant and so stubborn that they are at their own "world".
Sorry luv u long time, no offence ya.

Most of them are just trying to get along I'm sure... It'll only get worse too if the Israeli's bomb Iran. That one could be kicking off soon, theres no way the Israeli's are going to let Iran get a bomb, and it looks like they want one... I hope theres a peaceful solution to this, but it doesn't look good for the future.

maybe you shoyuld re-read my post
i was quite cordial to the the young muslim girl who took my chair and gave it up to her
my post was about her weird reaction when i went to retrieve my belongings that was on the chair i gave to her
and i complimented on the young muslim boys and the interactions i have had with them
but if you tell me your race and religion, im sure i can come up with a few disparaging remarks if you would like me to

FIRST: we are all human beings - we are all in the same boat-!
SECOND: Religion has been USED to divide those beings on that boat!
- Christians say: "you muslims are killing us", Muslims say "you christians are killing us", Jews say: "christians and muslims are killing us".
Buddhists say: "we don't give a ****"
FOUR: ...And people responsable for that "use", ARE making money!!
FIVE: only secret associations of those people can control people by their believes.

If I can take a wild guess here "looked like" would refer to an expression (eye/facial/etc). Screaming and knife point makes you sound like an typical (drive by) news reporter.
Why can't Paul's words be taken as written "L O O K E D ` L I K E"

Well, if Paul imagining that she thought she was going to be raped was based on a look in her eyes or a facial expression, may I suggest that Paul misinterpreted her expression due to pre-concieved notions many of us have about Muslims?
All in all, a non-event..........

Perhaps that is not entirely fair. I think most moderators here do a good job, and I know from experience that being a moderator is quite a thankless job to begin with. I think the problem might be that some moderators have a difficulty in acting unbiased. When a buddy steps out of line or consistently insults and harasses another member you don't defend him just because he is your buddy instead you try to be objective. If you don't do that it is not only unfair to the other member it also sets the wrong precedent as other buddies will follow the moderator's lead.
As to Marc26's comments, I don't know, he is now married to a Thai woman and takes care of a Thai boy, that would imply to me at least some affinity with Thai culture and some family bonds with Thai people. Perhaps he will revise his stance in the future.

We in America, certainly NEVER celebrated the murdering of school teachers in Afghanistan! Nicely worded slam though.
Marc26 expressed his disdain for lazy, nonworking, thieving, b@stard producing, deadbeat Thai men. (Most here would agree with that sentiment) Perhaps his choice of words (gassing), was unfortunate. But, those who know him, understood completely what he meant. And, I (we) did not take it literally.
Why do you constantly pick fights, that you will never win? Just to stir up the sh1te, a little? (that's called a TROLL)

You've been whining for some time about "unfairness", and the "senior members" ganging up on newbies, etc. Unlike so many of you "keyboard BM's", there are a lot of BM's here who have taken the time to seek out and meet each other in person. Therefore, friendship's have been anchored. It's not unusual then, that friends would think alike. And if called for, would defend each other. Is that so hard to understand?
As for Marc26, I can say that his "being married now, to a Thai woman", will have no bearing on his future "stance"! He is one to stand by his convictions. And, as I related to (cotambear) above, most of his friends know where he's coming from. And agree with him.
No reason for him to "revise his stance", to appease your misunderstanding.
As for the moderators...again, I ask why you'd pick a fight that your certain to lose?
