New Zealand
Hi Jonny
I am no expert but quite a few of my "friends" have bunked off to the sheep shaggers over the last couple of years. Was it something I said... By and large the cost of living, particularly housing, is really very low indeed but so are the salaries. The exchange rate is about NZ$2.7 to the £1. One of my friends was working for about £50,000 in the UK and went to good old NZ for 40,000 NZ Dollars - same kind of job. Basically a one way trip really although he has bought a house on the coast with a pool for about £200,000. One of my girlfriends now lives on Wahiki island and has built her own home with a really spectacular view for around £100,000. Residency seems to be reasonably easy to achieve if you don't get into trouble. Crime is low. However there have been some recent disputes about land titles as the Maoris are reclaiming their heritage and revoking land titles created by the original European settlers. There have been some high profile cases about this in the NZ press.
The problem I have with NZ is the distance from anywhere half decent. The cost of a return flight from NZ to Singapore is about NZ $ 1600 but I don't think there is a direct flight to BKK.
My experience of the Kiwi girls I have met does tend to put me off a little too. They all seem to jolly energetic... Always running and keeping fit. It is exhausting to watch them. No chance of a lie in on Sunday for example!
Hope this helps a little.
Mac
