Unhappy Aussie Cricket Tour continues

Its going from bad to worse for Ricky Pontings team
After scoring a fine 342 - 5 in 50 overs they though a win was certain against Somerset in a 50 overs a side match at Taunton.
Then Somerset battered the Aussie bowlers all around the ground and won with 3 overs to spare, scoring 345 - 6
It was reported the fielding was poor and the bowling worse. eg Kasprowicz 8-0-89-0
Pontings team are not happy.
Ponting was quoted as saying (with the Nat West Series against England and Bangladesh starting today) "The way we are playing now we will have our work cut out against Bangladesh."
More bad news is Brett Lee has an injured shoulder and may miss the whole one day series.
I know its the Ashes that only count, but a win is a win

Come off it Mr D.......2 Somerset Centurians were a Sri Lankan and a South African......what has that got to do with England being able to beat Australia in the test matches ???....have you forgotten 1997 when England wiped us in the One Dayers (which have nil importance except for The World Cup) and the Australia turned things around.

IMHO if Gilchrist fires it will be Ashes back to Australia...if Gilchrist does not fire....it may be close....hey but l have been wrong b4

BTW l am visting LOS in 18 days and have made careful planning that l am back in Australia the same day as the First Day of the series ( Lords Test).....bet you it bloody well rains and is a wash out

Test Cricket

None of us English supporters should be saying anything just yet even if over the next two weeks we go on to win the Nat West series.
Australia are unequivocally the best cricket team in the world and have been so for at least the last six years at both forms of the game.

This one day tournament shall be a nice appetiser however, my interest is in the purer type of cricket where teams play in white using a red ball.

Those are the matches which matter and currently all the London Bookies have England at a big price to regain the Ashes !

I agree totally with you Mav, that win has absolutely nothing to do with England regaining the Ashes. What is fact though is that the two players you mention are the contracted overseas players for Somerset, and its up to the Aussies to beat whoever is put against them. All I was saying in that post was that a win is a win and the Aussies did NOT play well.
It will have no bearing on the Ashes and I look forward to watching those games as you do.
I agree also that Gilchrist is a wonderful player who is vital to the Aussies. But its not just him,Matthew Hayden,Ricky Ponting ,Glenn McGrath are equally dangerous to an England side.
What will be sure is that England will not be rolled over as in the past and will present a far tougher challenge than past encounters.
As a side note,Brian Lara is backing England for the Ashes, going against the bookies odds for England winning. And the bookies aren't usually far out.

not a bad game last night nice and close, could have gone either way.
That catch had a lot to do with it one of the best,as did hammerson bowling,
piterson and hussey pick of the batting.

Was a better effort by Australia.....but a loss is a loss, and they really need a win at the moment.....English press are loving it....they have even dragged up another Shane Warne sex scandal....thank goodness he never comes to LOS.

http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/n...name_page.html

Pietersen's hitting was AWESOME, he reminds me of Lance Kluesner (another South African .....l would hate to be the bowler. Will be very interesting to see if England select him for the First Test, or will they drop Bell, who played against Bangladesh and did quite well, including an unbeaten century in the last Test.

Collingwoods catch was BRILLIANT......England will lose a lot in the field, when he is replaced by Thorpe in the Test Matches....Thorpe's fielding in the last 12 months has dropped off alarmingly....so hopefully for England he is working hard at it.

Harmison bowled with FIRE and has done his confidence a world off good, after a very moderate South African campaign....he will be a handful in the Test on current form

I am hanging on to the saying that "Form is temporary, whilst class is permanent"....however Australia need to quickly realise that they are in for a torrid time (l am guessing that they have realised this by now)....and need to work hard.

Lucky Australia have not been thrown into a Test match straight away (which happens to England when they come to Australia......not sure why England agree to that) as they would probably be one nil down at this stage. Still a month away from the First Test, so hopefully Australia will be peaking by then, as it would be hard to see the ashes heading back to England after 16 years.

To all of you from US, Scandanavia & Central Europe.....you probably do not have a clue what l have been dribbling about here.....but be assured when England play Australia in Test Match cricket....it's game on.

Sold Out..Hmmmm

All of the one day games involving the old enemy plus the first four days of each Test Match (5th day tickets are not for sale) are sold out and have been so for two months now! The interest in this series is incredible and what a shame England (the birthplace of cricket) does not have a venue with a similar capacity to those in Australia.

A good take on things Mav. As you say, luckily the test matches have not started yet,but one win can do a lot for confidence. At the moment England have it and Australia don't.
If I were an Aussie, I wouldnt be worrying too much just yet. Your batsmen are doing OK but the bowling really needs sorting out.Is this one tour too many for McGrath? He is the one really class bowler who needs to be firing come the tests.

Yes bowling needs improvement....not too worried about McGrath....l think he is like Courtney Walsh...he will always get his share of wickets, due to his ability to move the ball and not having to rely on sheer pace....Gillespie and Kasprowicz are the one's l am concerned about.

O/K lets get some facts straight for u poms
australia have won the past 8 ashes series (yes 8)
1989 4-0 ,1991 3-0,1993 4-1,1995 3-1,1997 3-2,98-99 3-1,2001 4-1,2002-2003 4-1
in all that time england has won just 1 live match (first test 1997)the other wins were in dead rubbers.

englands great players include tony grieg, allan lamb, robin smith, andy caddick,g.hick all africans bar caddick a NZs
jones current wicketkeeper was raised in queensland
pietersen is an south african with english mother

a little food for thought and some discussions coming up I reckon !!!

Andy Caddick "great player".....big sook is more of an appropriate description....he did bowl well on a few occasions, but not too often.

We are not squeaky clean in that area AD.....Kepler Wessels was hardly born and bred on Bondi Beach !...then when he used us for what he wanted he pissed off back to Sth Africa...never did warm to him....ugly style and graceless, but he did have the ability to churn out consistent scores.

Well you have fired the first shot over the bow.....let's see what comes back from Old Blighty

Betting odds

William Hill is offering odds of 100-1 that the Australian side will be recalled by the government following their dismal sequence of defeats. The same odds are being laid that one of Rolf Harris, Barry Humphries, Lleyton Hewitt, Evonne Goolagong or Dennis Lillee will be called up to Australia's Test squad. On a more serious note, England's odds of winning the Ashes have been cut from 7-2 to 11-4, as have those on offer for Ricky Ponting not ending the series as Australia's captain, from 33-1 to 12-1.

Personally speaking I believe that England's test cricketers have come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of years and that the Ashes will be a very close result.

Rod Marsh

If England are competitive in the Test Arena this summer one person who has made a massive contribution is the former Aussie great Rod Marsh; During the last few years he has laid the foundations of the England Cricket academy as well as being mentor to a number of the current squad including the big hitting Kevin Pieterson.
Unfortunately, his tenure finishes this Autumn when he returns to Australia.

What a wonderful testament to his skills it would be if England were to defeat the Old Enemy in an Ashes Series
