diving/travel insurance
I was hoping to get some information on diving insurance.I have travel insurance that covers medical, and I don't see it specified that diving is excluded.(but maybe it is?)I'm planning realisticly for 10 to 20 dives,so I'm wondering how common it is for someone in my position to buy specialized diving coverage.
Any info on companys, prices, what it covers, and your opinion on it's necessity would be appreciated.
Also travel insurance for Cambodia. It's excluded from my company policy and I'm guessing it would just make good sense to purchase some for my week long trip there.I think we have "Blue Cross" back home.Has anyone had to buy insurance for Cambodia because it was excluded from your policy(or whatever reason) and how did you go about it?
Thanks Matt

You would need to contact your insurance company to get the real answer on that one.

With Swedish insurance companies it is no problem, a friend of mine had to use a decompression chamber earlier when he had a dive accident (not in Thailand thought) and the insurance covered everything inc. flight home after the treatment.
With Swedish home insurance it usually covers travelling up to 3 months and cover almost everything.
I use BUPA in Thailand and there is a lot of exceptions, including dangerous sports.

As stevem has said, check with your insurance company. With up to 20 dives there is always the risk that something could go wrong , and the cost of time in a Decompression chamber can soon add up to a lot of cash.
Better safe than sorry.

I look at it the other way around, I buy dive insurance that covers my travel as well. Can't remember who I'm with at the moment but it's a scuba package with all the usual travel medical stuff included, local UK firm, so not much you to you anyway. DAN (Diver's Alert Network) is often cited on scuba forums, but it looked a bit US oriented for me.
Cheers,
K.

Diving insurance
You can get insured for diving through most UK insurers but if want look up the BSAC or PADI web sites and they have more info on specialised dive insurance.

DAN and Dive Assure are the 2 diving insurance companies in the US. DAN has been around for a while and is worldwide. Dive Assure is new and I am not sure how much of the world that they have representation in. Both now have policies that cover travel insurance along with diving insurance. There are comparisons of their policies on their websites.
A diving accident with a trip to a recompression chamber can cost a lot of money so I good idea to be covered. Usually the biggest expense, at least here in California, is the helicopter ride to the chamber.
The policies even cover medical evacuation if you need to go somewhere else for treatment but Phuket is one of the best prepared dive areas in the world.

Thanks for the help guys. I see locations excluded in my policy, but nothing about specific activities.I'll have to corner my insurance company on this one.Maybe I have a policy similar to the one Nicke mentioned(here's hoping)
I don't want to double up coverage, but I'll make sure important stuff is covered one way or the other(probably through DAN if need be)
FYI Countries I'm NOT covered in ...Afghanistan,Myanmar,El Salvador,Iran,Iraq,Cambodia,Laos,Lebanon,Libya,Nic aragua,North and South Korea,Yeman and Vietnam...This list subject to change......Yea,no kidding!
