Khon Kaen

Just wanted to start a thread off and see if we have any board members up there...I know I've talked to a few of you, but here's a place to talk about anything going on in Issan. It would be good to hear advice on places you visit frequently or just point out your favorite stops while in Issan. I will do the same, we are usually in Issan twice a year.

KK City, really enjoyed the nightlife there, maybe not everybody's thing, but i found the clubs i did go to were very trendy(172 club???) and playing some good beats.
oh and of course packed full of beutiful women.
Or for a quieter night(or a start off point), round by the lake is a nice spot to have a meal or a few bevs.
Only been to KK once, i would defintely go back.

Agree with you there wylos, its a not for the hard core monger...those uni girls are there by the dozens and I personally like the feel of the place in general, just a change of pace...I'll be there at the end of the month.

Day trips

Just a side trip while in KK.

The East side of Ubolrat reservoir offers a wide assortment of things to do, from trail hiking around the reservoir, walking across Ubolrat Dam, strolling through the botanical gardens, eating at one of the several restaraunts or food stalls that are located on the grounds, or playing golf on the 18-hole Ubol Rattana golf course.

Travel North on highway 2 from Khon Kaen city. After 20-30 minutes there will be a large sign in English and Thai designating the left turn for the Dam, this is road number 2109. Travel Northwest on 2109, after about 20 minutes you will arrive at the city of Ubol Rattana and the entrance to the Ubolrat reservoir grounds. The golf course is located directly straight from the main enterance of the grounds, the restaraunts, park, and the dam are to the left.

Erics bar
dont ask me why but i really like it in there, either at the end of theday before going to the room for a shower ,grab a quick beer great ,or to start the evening of chilling with yet another beer before moving on.
some good clubs ,i liked the Chivas club only been in once and that was with a couple of retrobates out to lead me a stray but a good night none the less.

Quiet city

Hi guys,
KK is not for the hard core mongerer, but there are plenty of things to do and also out of the way things also.
There is a mini-Cristins in town (The Villa) if you require a soapy....
I have lived in KK for a few years now and after being on the party scene in Phuket for aound ten years it was time to settle down, made loads of friends here..expat & Thai.
Other things to do ....the racetrack where you can have a bet, Ubol Rat Dam is a good day out, loads of fishing venues, dinosaur parks, water park with slides, on the ring road (Chudor Park).
Bar scene....Erics, Leos Bar, Number 1 bar, Seven's corner all expat owned, loads of nightclubs with Uni babes, all within walking distance from City center
Live music clubs..Ta Wang Dang & Top West, Rad
Eating is very cheap and multitude of restuarants (expat food if required)
Two nine hole golf courses in town...we are currently starting up the Khon Kaen BGA (Bad Golfers Association)
Big market every day city centre
About 60km outside KK is a place called Castle Howchoi in Kranuan, which is a great set up with fantastic swimming pool & great food..owned by English guy....bungalows, etc
Many department stores...Oasis, Fairy Plaza, Big C, Tesco, Makro
Obviously life here is a bit slower & relaxed than the tourist places, and cheaper, but there is something for everyone around the area, only a few hours drive from the Mekong i.e. Nong Khai or Nakhon Phanom
Writing this can't wait to go home as in Cameroon now working..only two weeks to go

i will go to kk with a couple of los newbies in august, i like it there probably a bit more happening than the udon.
love those uni babes, but dread the day when hard core mongers try going there, set the farang expats or regulars back 10 years in acceptance.

Well over the last 3 years ive noticed a massive increase in farang presence in KK and the nearest town to me Chumphae

I was in KK airport 1 day heading down to Bangers. The plane was just off loading from BKK and u can see everyone arriving. I thought i would try to count the no of farangs coming off the plane, I lost count after 46!!!!!

But i have to say generally speaking most the guys diddnt look like mongerers but certainly the average was up there somewhere beyond....................

Sure enough on 1 of my infrequent visits to KK from Chumphae popped into Eric's bar for a few hundred vodkas (cant get it in chumphae) and deffo recognised a few faces from patong

That's certainly different to the time I bought myself a ticket in Bangkok to KK about 3 yrs ago.

The first thing I noticed in the departure area was no other farang than me waiting
for this flight to a city I never heard of until an old teelac told me to go there by
email and she will meet me.

Well..I kept looking around and seeing farang getting on planes to Chiang Mai and
all the other tourist destinations and could not help but think 'what the fcuk am i doing' ?
and 'Will they even speak any english when I get to the other side' ?

Must admit for the whole of that journey I just kept my head down and was sh1tting myself,
suppose the long haul jet lag from London was helping me much either as I couldn't think straight.
Even worse, I could not work out why the hell I couldn't get through to teelacs moblie to tell her I
had managed to get a flight and was on my way

Even asked a thai woman to help but she couldn't help either, despite a lot of effort, finally arrive,
Airport looks like something out of an Indiana Jones movie, lots of thai's waiting behind the fence for
their loved ones. Nobody waiting for me of course but I'm sure many thought
'what the fcuk is he doing here' ? when they saw me.

Much to my relief the girl in the airport ticket office spoke english, tried the number and got straight through..
I had been putting the area code for KK before the thai mobile number 555 ''what a 42 carat plonker I am'' But to be fair that was the first thai mobile I had ever tried to phone and jumped to too many conclusions for my own good.

Teelac was on the way with family too so I was relieved and now knew my contingency plans on the plane of getting a hotel in KK for the night were not going to be neccessary. Always good to experience these things though, helps broaden the travel mind.

i am in kk at the mo,have been here 10 days,i love it here.the songkran festival has been going on the last week it has been packed and great fun.not seen any agro nor many farangs but its been good.the weather the last 2 days been bad, hope it gets warm soon.yesterday i went to wungo beach near mahasdarakem, was packed solid.also theres a new gogo bar opened in kk since my last visit here in september, its called rad, going there in 2 days time as my mate is joining me up here for a few days,so will let you know what its like.kk is the nicest place i have been in thailand, quiet if you want it to be or loud if you want it to be,depends where you go.only prob for me is i dont mind the thai food but every now and then i want a kfc or mcdonalds, and its a pain to drive 30 mins just to get it ;(
its hard to recomend kk as i believe if it became to touristy it would ruin the place,i like it as it is.the locals are great all welcome you in there houses,or to eat and drink with them and they all want to try and talk to you.
steve
ps.hoping to hit pattaya in about 8 days time the hoping to stop of in phuket for a few days.

Still hiring , drove from Phuket to Loei , just got back to Phuket last night , there is a sign directly across the road from the King Hotel in Muang Loei with cars for rent.
Also when I used to fly up there , bangkok airways did flights 3 times a week to Loei airport . don't know if they still do or not though..

I stayed in the Irish Clock for a week last Christmas. Nice place. Best breakfast I've had in Thailand.

Just got back and what can I say...had a great time in issan...always have.

This trip we took a long ride out to Burirum, very interesting place to say the least...I will be posting pics soon from the trip.

KK and surrounding areas are just interesting to those of us who enjoy taking the path less traveled, its still nice to be away from it all...We met up with some girls in a Karoake bar..great fun was had by all....they didn't admit to working in bars, but they spoke good english so I figure they were home for the holiday.

we covered 3,000km in a week , stopped at just before Saraburi on the way up there and had a few hours sleep at a roadside hotel on highway 2 , on the way back stopped off at Hua Hin ,

We stayed last Saturday at Irish Clock , one of my favourite hotels in Thailand.

Hi Tomyam

Yeh Saraburi seems to be a major way station, sometimes seems as if the whole of isaan is on the move at that place, really not that far north of BKK. Then the route we took was off the highway 2 and upto Chaiyaphum then accross to Chumphae and home on the 201 Loei road. Tell your Gf to look out for Nanongthum (the cut off for my village) on the 201, its about 15km north of Bann Haan the 1st village on the 201
