Phi Mai

Ok...just another stop along the way...actually this is where my gf grew up, as kids they would stop on there way home and do homework here.

Phi mai is a nice day trip, for the lessor traveled path seeker...yes plenty of farang around during busy season, but very few in the off months.

the Phi Mai Prasat, in Phi Mai. This is a temple of the vintage of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

I would tend to think it would not be a day trip...as its around a 4 hour drive each way..give or take.

For the budget traveler a bus to korat and a transport to phimai from there would probably be the cheapest route...Sorry I always travel with family while in issan so I don't have to deal with finding transport, I'm sure a bit of looking on the net would get you what your looking for.

There is a small website...www.khonkaen.com that also has some info.

Thanks for the link Hewood

I just spent an cpl of hours looking around the Khon Kaen site and think the place might be worth a visit during my next trip. I have fancied Issan before Ill have to do some research for the rest of the region.

No problem mars, its not like going to the south...very different situation there, but if your looking for something with a more real thailand feel then kk is a great city, lots of uni girls running around and plenty of bars to go out at night...again its not a place that's party central or anything like that...slow pace to things, but some interesting day trips and nice hotels availible....if you get a chance to go please return and post about you trip.

Phimai

Phimai has a number of guest houses who will be ok to stay in, if you do not want to do it in a daytrip from Bangkok; the Khmer ruins are not the only attraction there, there is also a giant Banyan tree and of course lots of Thai temples in the vicinity. WEll worth to spend a whole day there.

When I visited Phimai I stayed for a night in a National Park in the vicinity. Only thing to do there was sleep.

Yes captain..but that's why we have this section...this is not the nightlife section....Clearly not a place for everyone and certainly not if your looking for anything that resembles action...quite part of country with some history for those intrested in such things.

Don't misunderstand me. I mean there was not even something like a lobby bar to have a cold drink before or after dinner. I didn't speak about nightlife or bars, just about having a relaxing drink.
I like culture, and I visited a lot of countries to see the culture, be it Mexico with Aztecs and Maya's, or Europe or SE Asia (Angkor, Myanmar, Borobudur etc), but after exploring the country I like to have a drink before turning in and restarting exploring the next morning.
