great photos, a wonderfull look at a provincial town.
shocked to see even ladyboys back then. no wonder so many never returned home or many came back later to live. just that beautiful thainess to some of those photos.

Since most of us lived on base, normally you went to the girl's room/bungalow--very like the ones in the pictures. A hotel room was an added cost. One of the times I did take a girl to a hotel room, she cleaned out my billfold and left with my watch and ring--only time I have straight up been robbed by a BG in Thailand, the Philippines or Korea. Quite of few of the girls you saw at a disco were actively looking for a new teelub, but did one-nighters in the process. LT was predominant. Base was 10 miles away and there was a curfew. Only a few places in NKP had a few (2 or 3) dancers, although I remember a girl taking it all off in a hole-in-the wall--I STed her. The famous/infamous Worverine go-go in Udon had full showing and lesbian shows. Clubs along Patpong had dancers in bikinis which stayed on, at least in the first floor. The true go go club was in the future. You had to work at it to get a BJ. Not all of the girls in the massage parlors would provide that service. Some BGs would freak if you tried to go down on them. While they were quite Westernized after a while in town, they were still conservative Isaan farm girls in a lot of ways; of course that is still true. There were katoeys around and you did worry about getting one unawares. Best understanding is that the katoey is not a western contribution. A couple of years before penicillin resistant gonorhea; never mind HIV/AIDS. May have used condoms in massage parlors, but won't swear to that. Apart from the nightlife, nothing quite like taking the bus to town for the first time and seeing a street full of a couple of hundred samlars and motorbikes.

I just loved looking at the photos. Not only of the bar girls but also the other ones listed here, especially the shots of Korat and the surrounding area. I also really enjoyed the audio files. Looks like he recorded a lot of stuff and took even more pictures. You can order a DVD of the whole shmear. Pretty cool.
