Cars and Driving in Isaan

Celebration today, in Buriram!

Just got off the phone, with my GF, and she PASSED her driving test today, and now has a (automobile) drivers license. She enrolled in, and completed a "driving school course", in January, this year. This was her third attempt, after failing the test twice! The first two tries, she kept "freaking out" (panicky), and had alot of trouble with the MANUAL transmission. (stick shift) Finally got her into an automatic-trans...and she is much more "comfy".

Last year, I talked her into getting her drivers license for "motorbikes". This was NO PROBLEM, as she had practically grown up on them. and, of course, been driving motorbikes for a long time...with no license.

It's funny, though...she had NEVER driven an automobile. And I tried to put myself in that position...to empathize. Very different, in the western world, (I grew up in USA), where operating the family car was as familiar, as tying your shoes. At an early age, of course...sitting on Dad's lap, and steering etc. Then the "go-carts", "golf carts" and other similar (to cars) wheeled vehicles...to learn the "art" of driving. Apparently, no cars in her family...and very few, in her village.

I guess, that it is sort of like taking initial "flying" lessons...having NEVER flown before. (ie., learning the manual dexterity required to properly use the controls, etc...)

Last month, during a visit to her home, I let her "practice"...using my rental car. I became, her "driving instructor"...and, I admit, I was scared to death, a couple of times. And, have never been with a WORSE driver! But, she did improve dramatically, over a couple of days.

I just thought it was interesting, to think that this young women...had NEVER driven a car before. AND, it showed.

Well, congrat's to her...huh?

Hi Pablo,

Yes, lots of things that we take for granted as we grow up in the US and Europe just are not available for people in lots of third world countries. Running water and electricity are luxuries in countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, and others that I have been to.

Most of the time when we take a TG somewhere on a plane it could be her first flight.

But due to this they sometimes appreciate the little things in life more than we do. And I am sure that your lady is very appreciative concerning your helping her out with the car and getting her drivers license.

It just might be a little while before you let her drive in Bangkok traffic though.

Pablo

I understand that. I tried to walk from Soi 7 to QBar with a couple of ladies and got us so lost that we had to take a cab all of 2 blocks. Driver and I had a good laugh about it.

And just a lot less of a hassle for you if the taxi gets in an accident.

congrats to the gf pablo on that licence.
reckon on buying an auto for the gf when she arrives in oz, but she is learning in a mannual.

told my gf to get her car licence before she comes to oz (a lot easier than her passing the exam here because of language probs) and her cousin who will be going to the usa soon was told by her husband that she must learn to drive as well.

so there has been an old police car doing some horrible things around the village lately. the gf and cousin are getting better apparently but i dont think i will be allowing her to drive me anywhere.

different matter in oz, i imagine after a night out she will be driving as she does not drink, i maybe will be too mao to worry about her driving standard.
