The Province is great for exploring the beaches and scenery... Lots of island day trips.. Limestone structures.. Things to see non nightlife.. Stuff like rock climbing and white water rafting (I am waiting for the rain to start and will be giving this a go) activities are based up here.
For tourist zone theres Railey and Ao Nang.. Ao Nang has a BG zone also in a kind of hidden area set one street back from the beach rd.. Theres also an irish bar there but its not a real full on scene..
Theres some larger populated islands for exploring and staying on (I have read about Koh Jum and want to check it out soon).. And in general the scenery and locale are interesting..
Krabi town itself seemed kinda dull (theres another irish bar somewhere) but I havent really tried exploring it..
All in all its a good spot but if you get bored of beachy scene then limit it to a few days.. Always good to want more than to book too long and be bored..

Ao Nang was very quiet when we were there (June). More restaurants than bars. We stayed at Ao Nang Princeville Resort, across the road from the beach. Highly recommend the place for class, but staff were very standoffish. Didn't get to Railay (Sp), but will do that next time. Apparently its a short boat ride (10 Mins) to there. Krabi we visited in daytime, and apart from orangatang statues holding the traffic light casings, didn't seem too different to central phuket town. One thing I recommend, is climb the 1200 steps to part of Tiger Temple complex, about 6kms out of town, on way to airport (I think). Great veiws over Krabi and the bay. Take lots of water, and wear comfortable shoes if you do it. Your heart will probably work harder than it ever has before (well mine did anyway)

Great place
I love krabi Town. I stay at the City Hotel ( Your Krabi | Page not found is right in Krabi town itself. It's a comfortable place without being anything outstanding and the beds are very firm but is really well located and everyone is very freindly. Theres a night market straight across the road which is really cheap to eat and some nice restaurants near by.
Theres also a department store next door with a good sporting section where you can find some cheap fishing gear (if your into that) and then just walk down to the river (2 minute walk) and hire one of the long tail boats to take you fishing up the river. There is some great sights along the river and some real secluded places to drop a line. It's a great way to kill a few hours and to put a smile on a locals face when you give them your catch.
At the basement level of the store is a bar/restaurant which sells some great food but the menus are all in Thai so take someone with you who understands the lingo.
The guy that works at the front desk of the hotel is a mate of a mate and is a real character. I couldn't walk past him without him offering to send a girl up to my room. I didn't take him up on his offer so i don't know what the girls were like.
Krabi Town is probably not every one's cup of tea but well worth a night or two to decide if it's for you. The traffic is not quite as manic as other places either so hire a motorbike and just have a good look around.

there are two others bg zones in Ao Nang, one is at the very begining of the beach road and the other at the very end of it , kind of hidden as well
found them out a few days bfor leaving though.

For a day trip, we thought the drive back and forth was just too long. IMO, either stay one night in Krabi, or take the a speed boat back and forth. Then maybe explore the Phang Nga bay on another day.

take the ferry from Chalong pier M26.....much more fun, quicker and easier....BTW I'd say 2 hours Patong/Krabi is a bit shy in a cab.....more like 3+ IMHO

Flying to Krabi
I am thinking about flying from Bangkok to Krabi on my next trip. Anyone know about how much airfare runs for roundtrip?

I flew BKK to Krabi on Air Asia earlier this year. Cost was approximately 3000 baht return.
From memory they fly about 3 times per day and a transfer from Krabi Airport to Ao Nang hotels is about 600 baht. Most hotels will organise this for you.
