I was hoping someone might have information on Sakon Nakorn

I'll be traveling to Sakon Nakorn next year and hoping to learn a little about this place to help me plan my trip.

What would be the best and most economical way to travel there?

Are there any reasonable hotels in the 800 - 1500 bht range?

Does this town have reasonable super markets etc?

Is it tourist friendly?

thanks.

nice provincial town, brother in law is from a village just north of it, uni campus and a couple of "flag bars".
not for the monger, but its got to be there.

can hear the "phuu thai" dialect being spoken, not a language in real decline yet, but difficult to recognise it being spoken if issan/lao is hard for you.

home of the best beef i have had in thailand, it is quite good and very expensive.
stronghold of the dog meat market, so tell your local "tour guide", if your willing to try it.

Thanks for your description Fun.

It gives me a feel for the place.

Whats the climate there compared to Bangkok & Phuket?

Is it more temperate, or just as hot and humid.

I'll be traveling in April/May 08.

Don't know about the dog meat though.
If my friend goes for it, I'll try, but she sticks to chicken and sometimes fish.

Never knew that, but I was sure they would eat anything.

9 x cocker pups = 9 nice baskets or plastic buckets, good deal that, bring on the "dog and basket truck".

KK, i have always forgotten to grab a picture of that truck, does the truck go out your way, just so the bms can see it.

Bus is the most economical way to travel. The airfare is around 5000 Baht round trip. You can fly to Udon Thani then take the bus to Sakon Nakhon but it's a pain.
The Dusit Hotel is 500 to 2000 depending on the room. There are cheaper hotels and more expensive hotels. I personnally stay at the Dusit Hotel when I stay in a hotel.
The web site Sakon Nakhon "Live" has a map(click on maps then map by Google) with locations and some miscellaneous information.
There is a Big C and a Tesco Lotus in town. There are also some smaller stores, but with less selection.
There is actually a lot of night life, but transportation is a problem. There are no taxis and the tuk-tuks stop at 8pm but you can hire one for the day for about 1000 Baht. There are couple of places that rent cars, but since our new in town I would recommend a car with a drive. The other problem with the night life is that most of the girls don't speak much English.
I will be going in March but don't know what days yet.
If you need more info let me know.

I'd hate to order the beef at a restaurant and get "dog" unwittingly.

Thanks Tom O.

Just the kind of information I was looking for.

I'll check the web.

What's the best way to read up about the Dusit and make bookings.

Is it just as economical to roll up or do you have to go through an agency?

For transport I was thinking of hiring a motorbike.
Do you think this could work. Locals hire them in Phuket for 150bht a day.
I'll arrange to have in international drivers license before I go.

cheers

The Dusit has a web site but I don't remember what it is. I will see if I can find it. Yea a motorbike will work, if you know where you are going and don't drink too much. A friend of mine used to ride his bike, and fell off at least once month. Most of the places are a little bit out of town. There used to be a few in town but they have all closed. (too easy to spot the car outfront)
