PKS, good you sorted out the date.
I must ask, what is the reason you are traveling to Hat Yai?

Instead of low/mid range hotel for 4-600 baht you get a MUCH better and nicer hotel by spending little extra, e.g. 980 baht for Sakura Grandview.
There are 3+ massage parlours in town and countless normal Thai massage places, Hollywood and Paragon disco, countless of karaoke joints. Maybe give Pink Lady Hotel a visit as they have many kind of entertainment under one roof, including MP.
Hatyai is an entertainment town for Asian tourists, or used to be, I havent been back since the problems in the south started and the airport bomb.

The JB Hotel is ok and not expensive.
Most tourists in hat Yai are Malaysians so you will have plenty of company.

A year and a half ago I scheduled a train ride from Kuala lumpur to Hat Yai, with a limo pick-up in Hat Yai to Phuket. The Limo company strongly suggested that I arranged the pickup at the border (Padang Basar) to avoid Hat Yai.
Whether that recommendation was exaggerated or not, I don't know, but after we had passed Had Yai in the Limo the drivers commented that we now were on the good side.

Hat Yai is not really into the trouble zone but had bombings a few times. Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani further south is the real problem area and should definitely be avoided.

I was thinking of taking a plane to Hatyai in a couple weeks. Then ferry over to Koh Lipe. The past troubles are a concern to me. Especially the airport.

only been through Hat Yai once but wasn't so sure about it...it just has a bit of a wild west feel about it!
as nicke says there are plenty of hotels around the 1K mark and loads of P4P in the back streets which cater to mostly malaysian male SP's
Its a shame about some of the places on the coast nearby like Songhkla being effected by separatism/terrorism...some lovely peaceful paces around there

I wouldn't cancel, I would be very surprised if you had any trouble while you were there.

Songkhla perhaps
If you don't fancy Hat Yai try Songkhla which is a sea side resort. The Asia Pavilion Hotel is very good and has its own massage parlour inside.
There is small bar area called the Darkside (10 Bars) near/on Sadao Soi just round the corner from the hotel. If you want a realy cheap hotel then go to the Royal Crown which only charged 490 Baht per night on my last trip.
The Buzz Stop Bar is an Irish bar and does great food.

seconded.
I've been Hat Yai a few times over the 2 years. I was there just after one of the bombings, and i never felt unsafe. its definitely not a war zone.
I quite like the place and wish it was closer to Phuket. I'd visit there more often. Decent nightlife, really cute local girls (many Thai-Chinese there) and good shopping.
Pattani (which i've also been to a few times to visit the gf's family), Narathiwat and Yala are where most of the trouble is, and are much scarier.

The Samila is a good, if a bit more expensive, hotel right on the beach in Songkhla.
Songkhla also has a good Hash on Saturdays.
