Isaan Village House Prices (how much you spent for a house)
Just wondering how many baht you spent on your house in your wives (or other)'s village. and what did you get for that money?
a 2 bedroom place 10 minutes from the sea in phuket is between 3 to 6 million so i've gathered. for a place in a remote village i've heard you can have a decent size house built for around 200,000 baht (if you already own the land). I wanna know how much you guys spent and what did you get for your money, also your location (anywhere near a town, etc)

5555555555 fuk noooooo. i'm just curious.
bloody 8(english)k for a nice little place like that! thats quite amazing. i work in construction as a quantity surveyor, so if i ever did get anything built over there i would project manage it and every single baht would be accounted for. no girl has asked me for anything of the sort (yet), but i do want a house in LOS at some point within the next 10 years so its ok to ask, na?

I can imagine it would be a real pain to PM a project in another country, let alone Thailand. But you can make up for that with that pain knowing you have cheap labor costs, lack of unions and lack of health & safety standards. All of which I do NOT agree with at all, But its no my country so let it be I say, and get on with it. But at the end of the day cost managing a project this small plus building a house anyway is basic engineering so I can’t see it being a problem or very difficult as I do it every day but for ½ million / 1 million pound projects. and escalating costs due to compensation events isn’t exactly a big deal either as we're talking about pennies here in comparison to a variation on a project in the UK which can have 10's of thousands of pounds worth of implication, for an equivalent project.
but as i said i'm just curious what others have spent and what they got. i don't want to get into a construction debate really (not that anyone started one, but i got the feeling from 'loops' comments). plus i'm not looking to do anything as of yet, probably not for years.

Gf family has a 3 bed bungalow in Ubon Ratchatani, on the edge of the town, thai standard fitments and size, small plot just bit bigger than the bungalow, sale price 8 to 900,000bht, to build from scratch 350,000bht.
With out pictures does not help too much, may I suggest PS that you google estate agents, real estate etc for given areas of northern or wherever thailand and you will see some examples.

A couple of relevant things to put into the mix would be:
1 You can't own the land. I know that there are long leases etc but without a Thai partner it would be very difficcult build/own anything.
2 Land prices seem to be shooting up.. The house that we built would probably have cost double what we spent if we had had to buy the land as well.

yes i understand that, cheers. if i ever was to build something it would be on her land that has been passed down to her, i don't know how much she has in total but i know its a lot!!! big rice farms and sugar farms.
it was only something i was interested in and would be interested in a long way down the line, when i get older and want a nice big house to sit around in. for the next 10 years i obviously need to be living where the work is

It is an interesting topic no doubt, and the numbers make you weep when you look at what you get for your money in Thailand as opposed to the UK.
It's all do-able, happens all the time, but Thailand is changing very quickly and that affordability will shrink over the coming years.
I looked at a couple of places 'over the hill' in Phuket around 1999 and could have bought a 2/3 bed bungalow for 900k baht, at a time when we were getting 75 or so to the pound, what would that be worth now? As I say, the place is changing quickly.

So the prices are going up all over! so would you say phuket is a good place to invest right now, i.e. for an English man to purchase one of those condominiums? ie the ones on the hell in kamala.

Sa Kaeo - 1 Rai cost 50k & 800k for 120sqm² bungalow type house. 3 bedrooms- 2 kitchens- 1 "european" bath-room. It´s my wifes dream and I amortised the money. But on every holiday I have to slow down my wife to invest more in the house. It´s a nice place to stay for week or so for me but my wife calls this place home. But she stays longer and more often there. And I want that our kids have similar comfort during their stay at Mommies home. I can´t imagine to live the rest of my life in a small village anywhere in the world.

I wouldn't know if it's a good idea to invest or not, but the fact that most of the ex-pats seem to rent rather than buy probably says a lot. The laws, and the flaky way that they are applied, would suggest that it's a risky investment I guess.
People buy / build homes in Thailand to give to the family as a rule

another factor, it seems to me , is it doesnt seem to be too easy to re-sell your house anywhere
up in the village, i dont think i have ever heard of anyone selling their house
and down in touristy type areas, seems that people just buy new
at least, thats what i seemed to observe

well technically we met in april, as i knew her before, but never did anything until we met again in oct. but yes i know its fast. but i'm just thinking of my future, i don't want to spend it in england basically!!!

But realistically, given your age, if you would take the -/+10kPound it would cost you to build a house up country and invest that money instead, let's say for 15-20 years, you still could build that house and even have more money left.
My wifes got a plot in her village, we have a building plan and also bought a couple of trees already. That wood is stored at her dad's place behind the shed.
I've now put the whole project on stop for a while and invested the money in other assets.
Basically, I told my wife building a house up country is not an investment to the future but a dead cow. If we want to have a relaxed future later without the need of us both working hard, we need to do more important stuff with that money. First things first:-)
Yes, it would be nice to have our own house there, but for the few couple of weeks we stay there currently per year, her dad's house is big enough to hang around.
