LONDON (AFP) - London's smallest apartment, a converted storage closet measuring just five square meters
(54 square feet), has found a tenant for 585 pounds (820 euros, 1,065 dollars) per month.

Gordon Blausten of the Bruten and Co real estate agency said the "tiny but trendy" apartment packs in
kitchenette, shower and wardrobe under a loft bed.

Located in a turn of the century Edwardian building in the heart of the fashionable Notting Hill area of
west London, the apartment found a tenant after only three days on the market.

"A young professionnal woman, with a very active social life, is now living there," said Blausten. "She
probably doesn't want to spend too much time there, or at least, I hope she won't."

Crazy isn't it? Lock-up garages get rented out for even more than that! My son recently sold his apartment in London, that had its own numbered parking space in a little courtyard outside. But when the solicitors started doing the paperwork, they discovered that the parking space wasn't technically his - so he had to drop the price by 15,000 pounds! And it's not even in a smart part of the city.

Yes it is crazy! I have seen several apts. that small in my area. I remember one that was smaller than that a little bit, 4 ft wide and 12 feet long. All in a row was a mini-kitchen, shower, toilet, and loft bed w/ space under it. But they certainly weren't getting $1000 for anything so tiny here.

In fact right now the rents are much lower than 5 years ago, altho the prices to buy have doubled in that time. A person can rent a house here now for $1700 that would cost roughly $4500 per month with mortgage, tax, and insurance payments. Crazy??? Yet the rentals go begging, while every house priced within reason(if you can call these prices reasonable), has several competing offers which usually drives the price $20,000 to $30,000 over asking price and it is not unusual to see the price go more than $100,000 over th asking price if both house and asking price are attractive! Everyone wants to be an owner and none want to be a renter, because to be a renter in this area seems to bring the stigma of being "lower class." It's nuts!!!
