Ute
Mai Chob recently used the word 'ute' (Utility) for pick-up.
I knew the word already from the Hi5 movies I watch with Nathalie, but it is used it any other countries? How many did know the word before? (Non Aussies)

I had heard it, but only in / from Aussies or Kiwis. They are 'pickups' to us or 'trucks'

An interesting bit of trivia Nicke is that the ute was invented in Australia...
There existed an independent car company called Holden and it realized the need of farmers ,that were not as affluent as their American counterparts with a car and a truck, to have a vehicle that both worked the land but could comfortably carry the bushman and his missus into town on the day off.
They intoduced the Utility (useful, practical) and sold lots.
Later General Motors bought them out , but they still badge many of their Australian cars as Holdens and the ute is as popular as ever.
The most common Holden is the Commodore and closely resembles the Opel in Europe but with a large 6 or V8 engine and fans of this car constantly berate the Ford owners and vice versa...

Sung to the tune of Jingle Bells.......
Dashing through the bush,
In a rusty Holden Ute,
Kicking up the dust,
Esky in the boot,
Kelpie by my side,
Singing Christmas songs,
Its the summer time and i'm in,
My singlet,shorts and thongs.................

Thanks for clearing that up.
I thought that "ute" was Brooklyn talk for "youth"...
As in Joe Pesci's role (attorney), in "My Cousin Vinnie". 5555
He says to the judge, "Your honor, da two utes..."
Judge respnds, "Did you say utes?..."
"Oh sorry, your honor, the two yooouth's". 55555
(Also, "Ute" is the name of an indigenous native american tribe...Indian, in the state of Utah)

Never heard "ute" used before but not too difficult to work out what the meaning was knowing the Aussie tendency to save energy and cut short everything or so the BG's tell me.

I didn't really know what it meant but could guess by the question. Funnily there are not that many words used in Australian that we do not use or understand in English, whereas the total opposite is true of american and our understadning only comes from so many american films on British TV.

I would love to have a Holden SS or Ford XR8 ute. IMO Cheepest, fastest 2 door sports cars money can buy. But since petrol now is consistantly over $1.40, I have reservations. My next car will hopefuly be 4x4 Ford Ranger or Mazda BT50 cual cab (turbo disel).

Dori, my last "drive car" I owned was a new VZ SS 6 spd Ute.
I averaged 10.5 L/100 KM'S....Not bad for a 5.7ltr.
If it wasn't for LOS, I'd get myself a new VE
Got my priorities right nowadays....hehehehehe

Nice one ER, I did have a new CV8 for awhile, but I fell out of love with it when my got back into camping and off road stuff again, hence the other reason for a new 4x4.
From memory the highway cycle was very economical, but the problem I had with it (and I think it is the same on all the holden & ford preformance vehicles) is that they eat tyres. I didn't drive mine like a lunatic but still I could only manage 15,000 kms before I had to replace them @ $2000+
I think the Ranger & BT50 are very similar cars to one another and are made in LOS, can any BM's confirm that?

If im not wrong they eat tyres very fast because of the IRS system..... Is that right???? If so which it was with my brothers car he got a camber kit which staightens up the wheels so then dont wear out on the one side....

4wd/Awd eats tires. Good for keeping the vehicle strait in snow though. Not the cure all for sliding though.
