I'm retired and have been living in Thailand for 8 months now. 5 months ago I
leased a home about 6 klicks south of Phuket Town. I am brand new to this
forum and this is my first activity/post. Have read a lot of the questions and
answers posted here. Seems to be a lot of experienced knowledgeable people
posting here. So here is my question:

I have 30 ea 1 oz gold American Eagles in America that I would like to bring
back to Thailand and sell a few of them at a time when I need money for
something extra. I've done a little preliminary investigation at gold shops etc

One guy did at least ask how pure they are.

Welcome to the board Carl -

As far as buying or selling pure (99.9% Fine) then you will not have any problems as gold market here is regulated and gold prices bid/offer is posted daily (you can see on ticker on Channel 11 and ITV daily).

The best bet is for you to go to the Thai-Chinese gold dealers in Montri Road, Phuket City as these offer the best service in gold. If you intend to do this on on-going basis then find one who you can build a relaible service with.

Importation of gold may well be taxable - so would bear this in mind as doubtless the customs divison would be none to happy.

sell them in America, buy some GLD (Gold Tracker) on the NYSE and sell a few shares each time you want cash and wire the money to your thai bank account. Why would you want to risk having a pile of gold in thailand when you can have the same investment in your trusted us brokerage account ( except of course you think the world financial system is going to crash in the future)

Hey Carl,

welcome to the board. You could try selling them on Ebay, but Im not sure you will get top dollar for them. I have bought some gold coins on Ebay with varied success but it just gives you another option. I would sell them in the US and maybe keep some saved somwhere for a rainy day.

As above, sell the coins to a proper numismatics dealer where you get top (correct) price..

From there you can either buy GLD or (probably not as ideal for a small hoard) look at Perth mint certs (backed by the western Oz government) or look at reputable online gold holdings like the bullionvault.com a superb service I highly reccomend. Be very leary of some of the online gold based accounts like e-gold etc, they dont have much transparency and seem to be used by people looking for illegal untracable currency (scammers, cheats, HYIP, etc) and I dont feel safe putting large value or investment into such currencies despite the assurances of being fully backed by gold.

Others in my family are very big on taking delivery, but my situation is not suitable for hoarding and I have nowhere to bury the war chest I feel comfortable with. For me Perth certs are ideal but for you either GLD or The bullion vault offers easier gradual liquidation.
