What Is Your Top Stock Pick?

What's your hot tip, boys? What is the stock that is going to pay for your next trip to LOS?

My current pet stock is CRDN, Ceradyne, Inc. They are a ceramics manufacturer with some innovative ideas:

1) Lightweight bullet-proof vests. The army is snappin' them up for all its elite troops. They just signed on for another $122M order a few days ago. It's the hip gear to beat the heat in the desert, while keeping some safe space between your guts and those nasty bits of flyin' shrapnel.

2) Lighweight, radiation-proof metal panels that can be fabricated into barrels, shields, etc., for nuclear storage. It's a sandwich of a boron-carbide compressed powder(absorbs/blocks radiation) with aluminum cladding bonded to each side of it. A joint venture with Alcan(AL) just began shipping from their new 80,000 sq. ft. plan(with 2,750 ton short-stroke press) in Canada to their first customer, which is a French company that handles nuclear waste for much of Europe. Given the fact that they are a ceramics company, and this has jack to do with ceramics, it just goes to show you that these guys are thinking outside of the box, and will go where the money trail leads them!

3)They are developing a new kind of armor for tanks/armored vehicles. A cross between the two aforementioned products, this will be a sandwich with ceramic material sandwiched between aluminum cladding. It will have the capability of stopping explosive projectiles, while still being lightweight, making the vehicles faster and easier to maneuver. The generals are hoping the war doesn't end before they get to field-test this stuff!! Look out, Al Quaeda/Sunni insurgents!!

A few years ago, this company was making coffee cups, and retainers for kids getting the braces off their teeth!

Innovation + great management = big growth.

So, what is your hot pick? Let us in on it, so we can make more dough, and fund more holidays in LOS. C'mon, guys, those girls have got lots of hungry mouths to feed! They are counting on us to bring over the big $$$.

i bought on weakness 2 months ago when same store sales were weak
again, this is just a hunch, stock has run up in last 1 1/2 months and playing into earnings is extremly risky

Depends on what you mean.. Sometimes I am taking punts on stuff like this.. what I consider the high risk high return type punts.. Facial recognition and biometrics (palm scans) is a growth injdustry with the world as it stands.. Made some money with IDNX and followed visionics after the merger.. Dont have any currently but liked them as a gamble type punt.

Another big brother idea.. In the UK they are setting up a system to follow cars as it drives on every road and motorway. Its actually sold to the public as a navigation system, a vehicle tracking after theft, and a traffic congestion solution.. However I feel without doubt its also got massive between the lines survielance and gov control aspects but they downplay that angle. The idea that this system in place could be used as a per mile charging system for road tax has also been mentioned, that hints that it may become a requirement for vehicles rather than an option or become based around camera reading of plates in real time.

The company is called trafficmaster. What I like is that despite being a private company this has very beneficial government implications and assistance (installing equipment on all roads) that has essentially no competition. Government wants the company to do the job, its guaranteed a customer to foot the bill, so its not going away. This is another big brother camera on every street corner tool.. It will get pushed into being and become huge IMHO.

Just a couple of ones that go with my tin foil hat ideas of governments pushing new ways to watch populations and control them, turned into a personal profit for me.

Otherwise I have a spread of things over the silver, zinc, uranium, sector exposure.. I dont class those at 'hot picks' in individual stocks as I am trying to manage spreads of exposure.. I have everything from high risk exploration and juniors to unhedged main producers.

Stock tip

I almost hesitate to recommend any stock to anyone, as someone might actually think that I know what I'm talking about and end up losing $$$.

I'll do it anyway, though. The stock is Elan (ELN), traded on the NYSE as an ADR and also in Ireland and London. It's an Irish drug company with a new multiple sclerosis drug and an Alzheimer's drug now in Phase II testing that may well move on to Phase III and then to the market if all goes well. The potential Alzheimer's market is in the billions, so if they manage to come up with something, the stock price should move a lot higher. Currently, it's about $14.40 US a share. Anyway, it's had a wild ride the past few years. Basically, it's a crap shoot, if you like that kind of thing. Don't invest any money you can't afford to lose.

Top Stock...would right now be Bavarian Nordic.....Their stock rose 20% this morning, after their competitor, withdrew from the race to be the sole supplier of a new small-Pox vaccine for the US.

Bavarian Nordic...

Network 'Life Science Bavaria'

but again do a check yourself...would not be solely responsible for dishing out a tip..and you loosing all your heard earned LOS MOney

Do your own research, but.......

I'm into Petrel Resources on the UK AIM. The company has been working in Iraq for some time trying to get oil PSA's (Profit Sharing Agreements) and they are now waiting for ratification of a PSA in Jordan which will spread risk a bit.

Obviously highly risky, but the potential is there for it to go through the roof. (Or not )

Otherwise I'm with LivinLOS. Uranium and silver. Look at some of the smaller Canadian companies.

Here's a nice one for you D -- see you had a nice 4% rate hike there on Wed to 16% ... humm and last resort credit is offered at 19.5%. Do you think you could set up a loan shop over there mate (Denver-K2 Basket Case Loans Inc) - pretty sexy rate of return.

How come they have not blown up the Central Bank yet? Got to be the odd dollar or 2 left in there - could be your exit mission

Joking aside of there was way to buy into telecoms or major industries there or Afghanistan - after all cant get much worse - can it?

Believe me Kev they have tried to blow that bloody bank up several times. They have had the sense now to spread thier assets around town. Not sure there is that much money here anyway, I'm lead to believe it's in other countries bordering here! Could be wrong.

Shortly after the troubles they divided the country geographically into three and gave three GSM providers a region (Each regions population was of a similar size) under the proviso that after one year of trading the company offering the best tax dividend to the Iraqi tax collector would get the 'whole' country as the prize.

That hasn't been the case, the three main service providers (Atheer, Orascom/Iraqna and AsiaCell) are still here and although the services they provide are much of a muchness there is now a better 'cross-network' service.

To have a pre-paid SIM now is difficult due to peoples lack of payment. You apply in writing and have to provide passport pictures etc. Top up SIMs and Scratch off cards are freely available at the Haji markets.

GSM towers used to be blown up regularly by the AIF as they were seen as a Western influence. They now leave them alone as they 'spot' and adjust mortar fire onto targets and obviously detonate remote devices using GSM phones.

I think it is going to get much, much worse Kev to be honest. I'll stick to buying my VAT Free gold Sovereigns and keeping them under the floorboards! I bought (a few!!) for GBP88 a year ago and have been offered GBP125 for them. I'll hang on to them a bit longer as I like counting them by candlelight, wearing fingerless mitts, central heating off and muttering humbug to myself now and again! 555555

Zinc zinc and more zinc, Ive been overweight in zinc stocks for 18 months now. Its a case of the supply and demand....the worlds using more than they can dig out of the ground.

You and Uncle Crusty going to run Santa's Grotto this year then ....555555

That 42% return is pretty good (Gold was $466 this time last year and now trading at $620 - up 33% - so you've beaten the underlying market) - good stuff D - so we should shelve the Dever-K2 Basket Case Loans Inc for now - its pretty sad to think things could get worse there - heading back to dark ages - must be a pretty miserable existance for the locals without external assistance.

Uncle Crusty!! 5555555555 Oh dear! We will need some pixies in green tights.......mmmmmmmm........Thinks!

Is it really 42%.......Well chuffed with that. I'll hang on to them a bit longer then and try and find a few more. I like popping into jewellers in the UK and looking for them, hopefully they will increase in value. I have ten of them here with me as my 'taxi to the border' money I carry around with me.

There are lots of the big oil companies just sat on the border of Iraq now in Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi waiting for the situation to ease before they start thier engines and move in.......Not sure when that is going to be though, bit longer yet!!!

CNE on the rebound.

Canadian oil trusts got hammered in the first two weeks of the month on news that the govt. is pulling their tax-exempt status. However, that law change won't go into effect until 2011. In the meantime, after a 40% pullback, the Canroys started coming back this past week, rising even on the day oil dropped $2.50 per barrel. I bought in near the bottom, going with CNE because at the price I bought it for, the dividend is over 18%. At Friday's price, the dividend is still over 17%. The Canadian oil trusts are solid stocks, mostly paying in the 10% to 12% range on dividends. They are also big buyout candidates, now that the prices are so low.

im still well ahead, and i knew it was risky with such a run-up into earnings but i was in at 32, and will buy more if it pulls back
