Thai Bank A/c

Just a quick update

I opened up a Kasikorn ATM a/c today, really easy all I needed was my passport and my initial deposit, diddnt even ask for my address! ATM card given on the spot with pin number which u change straight away. Simple as that

I was then offered for a 1 off payment of 2100 baht accident & life insurance cover, I thought this was pretty ok:

Me & 1 other nominated person, cover for each person

death traffic accident 3,000,000 baht (thailand)
death traffic accident 2,000,000 baht (outside thailand)

general life cover 1,000,000 baht (thailand)
general life cover 300,000 baht (outside thailand)

hospital treatment each event upto 20,000 baht

lost earning per day in hopital or unable to work 1,000 baht per day

ok its not going to cover everything but for the price I thought a well worwhile investment

Graham read or get someone to read the small print, don't know about Thailand but similar policies here in the UK actually cover very little once read in conjunction with clauses. Saw one in UK issued by America Life only paid out life cover if killed by horse drawn perambulator or tram.

Got one from SCB last year for B900. Who knows what the fine print said, I can never be bothered to read it, better things to do with my failing eye sight.

Hey G.,

Is that solely an ATM card or can you use it for purchases, i.e. a debit card?

Cheers,

K.

Kasikorn offers an ATM card (100 baht IIRC) with 20k per day allowed or a VISA debit card (cost 300 baht IIRC) which allows 100k (in 20 baht goes) per day from the ATM and can be used for in person visa debit purchases..

I have never been able to get it to work online as theres no address registered with the card it seems..

Normally you can not use VISA Electron for online purchases.

A real VISA or Mastercard is pretty difficult to get here and take ages, they dont say it is difficult but you will never hear back from BKK HQ. (Look like it must be approved there)

And they are very unsafe..

Where in Europe (and I presume the US) any fraud is the banks problem here any fraud is your own loss.. The bank just takes your cash and says tough..

If you have purchase dissagrements dont expect the Thai Bank to with hold the payment etc like back home.. Basically I wouldnt have a Thai card..

Dodge, I would just wait until you are here.. They can be bad at dealing with htings remote but to be honest the banks for a simple pocket money current account and ATM card are really easy..

Kasikorn, Bank of Auyatya (?), or Bangkok bank get a lot of good reports.. Kasikron is a 5 min operation to open account and get ATM issued there and then.. Getting net banking is a lot more drawn out but the do offer it..

I opened a new bank account today with Siam Commercial Bank, got electronic Mastercard ATM and Internet banking. No work permit was required, but you need an adress as usual.

It is the internet banking part I was most interested in, I dont know the features but will found out next week when internet banking is activated. Will report back later.

I have Bangkok Bank also but getting internet banking there is not so easy.

Another notice, I read about a card somewhere with real VISA or Mastercard, it stated that for Thais you need to earn 15,000 b/month and for farangs it was 80,000 b/month. It's strange they have that huge differences in requirements for Thais and Farangs.

Strange Nicke - surely not - TiT - for Farang to earn 5 1/3 times a Thai seems just about normal. (Yes - I'm being very cynical)!

I wouldnt want a real Thai Visa/MC as like LiL pointed out earlier - any errors on the a/c would either never be refunded or simply take ages to sort out.

I never got any thing from banks either for private accounts, but for my company account I used to receive statements and other things.

So how do you like the internet bank? Do you pay any bills with it?
