I don't know about UK phones, but most US phones are locked to a particular carrier. I assume you have a GSM phone. If it is locked, you will need to get it unlocked either in UK or LOS. This will let you use the phone with any carrier. You can the buy a sim card (I use 1-2-call) at any 7-11 to replace your original one. This card will come with a local phone # and a limited amount of baht in air time. Purchase additional air time at the same place. The sim card is all the network really sees. The phone wrapped around it is just an interface to you. When you go back home, give the sim card to your favorite BG if there is any baht left on it, and put your original card back in.

I think the US is the only country where phones are locked. A bunch of crap if you ask me, in somethings the states are really twisted. I know that for most of Europe you can just travel from country to country buy a new sim card and your phone works.

I thought that might be the case. Everything about the mobile market here is screwed up and slow to come (not a sexual ref.). At least it is easy to get unlocked phones.

Actually thats the way the Mobile Phone Companies want it to be so they can make money. I just buy a phone in MBK and use my US sim card when i am back in America. When i am in LOS i change it to DTAC and add minutes to my phone.

I think its pretty easy to get them unlocked these days, and then it will work anywhere. I just had two unlocked last week and it took about five minutes each.

To answer the question simply, I guess, take your phone (check it is unlocked) and buy a Thai sim-card?

If you get a phone as part of a contract or a phone is heavily discounted becuase it comes with a locked in card its the airtime company subsidising your phone purchase becuase they expect to make money back via the calls.. If you buy your own phone full price with no contract it wont be locked..

I remember in Holland they came out with pre pay cards locked into the pre pay provider for super cheap (like 20 quid with 20 quids worth of calls) so effectively a free phone.. Guys I knew bought 100's of them.. Unlocked them.. sold them on the black market.. Just walking into the shops and saying how many of those you got.. 40.. OK I will take the lot !!!
