Question Thailand Crime

I am posting this in the Newbie section just in case i offend anyone (i am certainly not trying to).

I was just wondering about the crime in Thailand. Am i able to leave my valuables on the beach while i am swimming? i would not expect to on a main beach here such as bondi (sad world we live in hey) without them getting stolen eg. wallet, camera, phone.

Do they have some kind of safes on the beach? or some kind of system?

Also, do they have bars on the beach in Patong? that is what i plan to be doing most of the time....

You have answered your own question, if you wouldnt do it at home, then dont do it here. Sadly small petty crime is a problem, but its no worse than anywhere else in the world.

when i go to cronulla beach dont leave my valuables on beach either as stevem said do what you do at home and you wont have problems.
keep your cash away from prying eyes dont flash it.
suggest you use hotel safe to keep passport (keep a copy with you just in case)money and any vaulables you have.
crime in patong is much less than most towns in australia.
have never had a problem and have always felt safe.
more chance of being ripped off paying higher prices than you should when bargaining for good or services.

Cool Beach bars

Most of the main beaches are split into zones where the beach chairs are rented out. These also have a small bar which sells soft drinks and beers. If you are worried about your bag ask the lady who runs the bar to keep it safe for you.Again if you are on the beach you should not have too much money or valuables with you.

If you have a room with a safe in it I suggest you keep everything you cannot afford to lose......passport, credii cards, travellers cheques etc.....in it and just take enough BHT for your day or night out

If there isn't a safe in your room there will be one in the reception where they will give you an envelope to put your stuff in and it all goes in the communal safe....some make you sign for this-some don't

Travelling with your boyfriend should help as one can swim whilst the other watches etc however best general rule is not to entice potential theives

I do this all over the world when travelling and do not consider Thailand to be any worse than Bali or Aus......in fact I have dropped BHT in Thailand and had a tap on the shoulder with a smile and the money returned....both times by kids and both times i just gave it to them as it was worth less than a $AUS

Hi Battlecat,

Well my experience has been wonderful in regard to theft. Like one gentleman posted, once you rent a beach chair, there are beach boys that are like waiters. They will look out for your things, what I have been told by many is, it is the tourists you need to worry about, not so much the thai's. I dont take massive amounts of cash, but have had my camera and video cam and have never had a problem. Also, there are always other folks right next to you that you usually will chat it up with anyway, they will also keep an eye if you ask. Maybe I've been lucky, but in the many years I've been going, I have never had a problem, beach or anywhere. I spend my days at the beach and usually go to the same area, so have always had the same beach boys. They have become like family, and always willing to help. Hope this helps.

Sunshine...
