I have read in some brochures that each individual has to pay tax of 500bhts when entering bangkok. Does anyone know anything about this?

Its departure tax. You do pay it whenever you fly out of any country, but most of the others incorporate in the ticket cost, the airlines then pay the respective governments.
Why Thailand is still doing it the old fashion way, well I guess TIT!!!!

Those that spend every single baht they have should staple the 500 note into their passport on arrival.

Same as you Paul I always have a few thou left but probably because I know I will be going back again in a few months, I've seen guys put their last bahts in charity buckets only to find out about the 500bht tax 10 mins later.

I Nearly had that happen to me
My last night in Bangkok, realize I still have 20000 Bht in my wallet and I don't feel like exchanging it. So I called up all the Thai friends I made during my stay and we hit the town till just before my departure time. Lucky I had a spare 1000 Bht note I kept for emergencies in the bottom of my suitcase...
