Thai penalty for drunk driving.
I searched the threads but could not find any info about what the penalties are for drunk driving in LOS. This will likely never concern me but it is always good to know. Does anyone know what the laws are for drunk driving there, and is it routine to just pay the police the 'fine' on the spot and just go home? I did hear about the severe penalties for drugs and weed, enough to keep me from ever doing either, but I'm still unclear about alchohol, public drunk, etc.

I read that lots of expats who live there drive scooters around. Especially in areas like Phuket. You never know what might happen, even if only driving 10 blocks home from the bar. You're right though, driving drunk is probably not a good idea anywhere. Just wondering how stiff the penalties are.

well driving with alcohol seems not the best idea for me. even if you might come out with a small fine to the police ( what i am not sure) it is not worth the risk.
The trouble coming up if you have an accident will be for sure and dont think about what will happen if you injure or kill somebody! No good anywhere nut real bad in LOS i think
i dont drink and drive at home , so i wont start it in LOS

I agree. I meant if you had one or two drinks at a restaurant and then decided to drive on home, I don't know what the legal limit is and can't seem to get any info on the INTERNET either. Here in Florida of course, it's legal to drink one or two and drive, as long as the blood alcohol content is under .008% and you are not intoxicated. The only thing I saw suggests that there is not much in the law to deter drinking and driving there. That half of all accidents in Thailand involve alcohol. Almost sounds like it's just a way of life there. But I'm with you. When I go to a bar I would always take a taxi. Especially in a foreign country where I'm not sure of the laws. Guess that settles it then.

Drink driving is crazy and no sympathy for anyone caught, but eveyone has done it at some stage. There was a farang caught near Chalong at about 10pm , he was released from the cells at 1730 the next day. Your on holiday so why risk spending part of it locked up.

This is not anything like exact
If you are stopped and not in accident, chances are it will cost u a plate of noodle soup if u know the policeman
If you are stoped and in light accident, in a real state but have friend can come get u out, might cost u 20,000 baht, under threat of deportation
If u r Thai u kill farang and its ur fault, depends on who you know e.g. deputy mayor, but likely even then u get 18 months sentence but probably out on probation after 3 months
If u r Thai u kill Thai and it ur fault then it could be alot more

fines
farang i know from udon got caught last songkran just outside khon kaen, he thought fines to the value of an angel witch showgirl barfine plus long time.
400 baht and keep on driving.
as G Spot, said if your in an accident, may your god help you.
driving up country is good fun, and fairly safe, except for the drunken truck drivers, bus drivers and the odd buffalo on the highway.

High penalties
Several years ago a fellow Hasher was driving home after a Christmas Day BBQ and piss up.He was fairly well on and was not paying attention when he drove into a police check point.
He was taken to the main police station and given blood tests. He was found to be drunk and the police kept him in cells over Boxing Day and his court appearance was sheduled for the next Monday.
He was told he was facing a TWO year jail term.Luckily he was sensible and very polite to the police. They actually told the judge of his good behaviour.A friends wife acted as translator for him.He was given a hefty fine instead of jail but the judge warned him there was no such thing as a second chance.
My advice - take a cab.

Hummm if sober before we come home can go back out on the lash.
As crustacian said no such thing as a second chance. That bloke was lucky but does anyone really fancy spending time in a jail in Thailand???

Your friend didnt have an accident, can this end in jail?I cant believe this, normally its just your licence away. Do Thais tell you a horror story first, so later you are happy to pay any high fine ? Part of the game? I am sure your friend did very well to stay cool and polite

Would never do that, it's not worth the risk . 100 bath takes me and my GF home in the "comfort" of a tuk tuk.

Driving Whilst Drunk . . .
Hi all . . .
I would imagine that I am no exception here, and that we all have done it, at some time.
I got caught here in NZ about 4 years ago, and blew the digital alcoliser at well over twice the legal limit here. I am certainly not proud of it, and apart from having to walk everywhere for six months, when I had a perfectly good car parked in the garage, I paid a fine of $830.00NZD, plus $130.00NZD Court Costs. (I believe that NZ is still one of the most lenient countries in the world, as to alcohol levels).
At the exchange rate at the time, this was something over 350 pounds UK. What was worse . . . This put a reasonable hole in my Thai holiday account!!!
I just don't do it now, at all! I can see no reason to go on holiday to another country like Thailand, and to think that somehow that I am bulletproof because I am a Tourist.
I know that some BM's hail from various Scandinavian countries, where there is a 'zero' tolerance, where driving and alcohol is concerned. Why then, do some feel they are entitled to get themselves totally 'legless' and drive, just because they are in another country on holiday ?
Cheers

You also take a chance if you let your girl ride you home on the bike. They are crazy little nightriders in more than one way are'nt they?
