Intro and "Here's What I've Learned in BK Thus Far"

Greetings,

I've been in Bangkok about 36 hours now. I was to have been here last Fall, however, I had to postpone. Briefly, here's a few things I've learned.

1. Thank you to this forum, especially LOS for his endorsement of the Masjestic Suites. It's only $33 a night!!! In a perfect location, clean, HBO, refrigerator, super high secfurity door lock, nice in-room safe, free breakfast, Wi-Fi for $11 a daY extra or $4 for two hours. The best part is, it's considered an extension of the brand new Majestic Grand so you can walk a block over and use all the amenities: Gym, Sauna, steam room, hot tub, swimming pool, etc.. The gym is lacking a free weight bench press so you'll have to get by with a Smith machine. However, there's a big screen tv with remote and nobody is in there so it's like having yourown private gym.

2. You can get by eating for virtually nothing using the street vendors. Great slices of fresh fruit for 10 bt (25 cents) I went to the Landmark and splurged at the beautiful International buffet this afternoon. 880 bt with 3 bottles of water and tip- 1,000 bt and worth it.

3. LB's- as I already posted in a Bangkok thread this place is infested with lady boys. Most are easy to spot, however, the ones that are not cause you to look at everything else three times over. I talked to guys that have been here 20 times and they still can't tell for certain either. Be careful about Nana plaza, there are a couple clubs with all LB's and you'll get in and hit up for a drink before you can gather your wits and realize what a mistake you've made.

4. Women, the real ones- Very, very few above average. Combed Nana and Soi Cowboy and only came up with two qualifiers.

5. Ask five different guys the best place to go and expect to get ten different answers.

That's it for now, hope it helps.

If you eat the buffets in the higher end hotels you will see it, and add in some drinks, easy to get that amount.

1000 baht for gods sake.. Lots of meals I eat in a real resturant in Patong are 1000 baht !! Dont confuse being versatile enough to eat some somtam as cool.. its not even like that was a really pricey meal to be shocked at..

Depending on my mood I can go from 20 baht somtam and chicken to 4k plus in Baan Rim Pa.. If the market is open I will probably get a few kilos of king prawn for tonights BBQ in a minute.. Might be 1.5 - 2k baht in prawn alone, yet I am a cheap charlie when it comes to spending a couple hundred USD on swanky hotels (Landmark, Westin, Etc).. How each person choses to live is really up to them.

Update on Bangkok visit

Just checked-out of the Majestic Suites and headed to Pattaya. Once again, thanks LOS for the Hotel reccomendation. The Majestic Suites was a great place to stay, cheap, nice, perfectly situated and has all the previously mentioned amenities, not the least of which is the Electronic safe.

In regard to the buffet cost, I also checked the Sheraton and that was over 900 baht for the evening buffet. The Majestic Grande lunch buffet came to about half of the Landmark, but it is less than half in quality. In terms of cost, back in the states I spend about the same on groceries each day on average as the cost of the Landmark buffet. (I eat very healthy, and a LOT).

In regard to the LB plague, they seem to infest the corner area of the Nana Plaza later in the evening so they are not as much of a problem in most other areas such as soi Cowboy or soi 33

I was refered to a bar called "Bamboo" which is on the same street as the Nana area only across Sukhamvit and down about 300 meters on the left. There was a band and some nice ladies.

check out the "hilary" bar on same soi as nana. further down past the dynasty hotel on the left. have a live band every evening. spent a few nights in there and had a great time. nice sized pool tables as well.
