How will Non-Drinker be treated in LOS?, MTB?
My LOS-experienced friend and I are coming in August for 2 weeks (my first trip). In his 7 trips he has never been to MTB and I plan to change that shortcomong right away. I, however, am allergic to alcohol (it has been a real drag my whole life). Found this out originally at 15 when I chug-a lugged half a bottle of red wine and almost died. Have tried, in vain, to find something that does not make me sick almost immediately. Found that Periere water works just fine.
I, of course, will gladly pay whatever the equivalent price might be compared to alcohol (or whatever the bars etc. charge) and will keep up with my buddy, drink- by- drink. Maybe I just talked myself out of feeling uncomfortable about this, but my question is: how will this affect all other facets of the LOS experience? Will it still be fun? Will I still womanize to excess? Will the women assume I will keep them up all night and not gracefully pass out? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi LA Tom,
You'll have no problem at MTB if you drink soft drinks or water and you wont get charged silly either - it really doesnt matter. The only real result will be that as the night goes on your friends and the BM's will get louder and more repetative and you will remeber everything whereas they wont! As far as the girls go - not a problem - in fact some will actually be impressed (but most would appreciate you buy them a drink with or without alcohol). Have a good trip.

Plus - the risk of your "tools" not working due to the exteme intake of alcohol is much less....

Some nights when im in MTB, I don't drink. Not much is said after the inital pointing and laughing, but that I think is due to the 15 bottles i had drunk there the night before!
Im sure if you never drink nothing will be said. Then there is the bonus of never having to taste Nicke's "Black Death".
But as other's have said, you will be first on the canon's when a tasty bg is sighted!

I often have a bottle of water or Diet Coke, as the beer intake can get a bit too much at times and the body need a day off from time to time. I have never had a problem ordering these drinks at MRB or abnywhere else, nor found that I didn't have fun or enjoy myself, so no worries there

I don't drink alcohol as a rule (just don't like the stuff). No problem getting non-alcoholic drinks - I usually rotate through a cycle of Sprite ("sooprite"), soda water ("nam so-daaa") and orange juice ("nam som") with an occasional coffee to perk me up ("kafee rorn" or "kafee lorn").
People buying rounds can be a nuiscance as you get presented with an endless stream of various 'shots' that you have to decline and this can be awkward. However the staff soon cotton-on and stop including you or provide you with a soft-drink equivalent.
Bars tend to charge less for soft drinks, but you can make up for the appearance of being a cheap-charlie by buying the girls and mama-san drinks. Gogo's seem to charge as much for a soft drink as for alcohol, if not more Many is the time I have sat down in a gogo and ordered a 'happy-hour' draft beer (60-70 THB) that has sat untouched while I assess the talent ('happy hours' don't usually apply to soft drinks ). If nothing appeals I leave it there, if I buy a girl a drink, then I will buy a soft drink at full price (90-120 THB) and leave the beer alone. I can visit one or two dozen gogos in a night and saving 50THB in each can add up to an entire barfine.
Beyond that, the girls seem to like a non-drinker for a change

Kids don't have to have a drink to enjoy Disneyland... do they?!?
Well... you won't need any booze to enjoy LOS (aka Disneyland for adults)!
Still make sure you buy your round or else people may think you're a Cheap Charlie

I am also a c&c type, coffee and coke. You can count it at your finger how much alcohol i drink over the year and did the same in LOS. No Problem anytime or as already mentioned even the girls like guys who dont drink alc. I dont need alc for fun and had a lot of fun while staying in LOS. Dont worry about that point anymore mate

As a Christiania fan (the free-city in Copenhagen) I too prefer a good smoke to alcohol - but I guess hash/pot or that kind is allowed in Thailand?

A couple of funny quotes about alcohol.
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day. ~Frank Sinatra
Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, it is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver. ~Jack Handey?
Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza. ~Dave Barry

One of my Hash mates is a regular visitor to Patong , he is also "tee-total" and never has alcohol . He has no problems anywhere he goes , only drinks non-alcoholic stuff but still joins in with everything and has great fun. He pops into MTB a lot and the only thing he does is "skip" the shooters when the bell is rung , he has a good laugh the next day when he is the only one who remembers what everyone got up to the night before.

Well I am currently back in the UK for 5 weeks before I come back to LOS. But I don't drink at all, and never had a problem in the year I spent there. Also won't see a problem I doubt with the next few years there either.
You will have a great time, and actually you will find, women prefer the man not totally pissed.

Don't apologize for not drinking
L.A. Tom,
Don't feel like you have to apologize for "not drinking" It's an individual decision on how you choose to conduct your life. I'm what some would call a "health nut" (those with an inner-sense of guilt about their own lack of discipline). I get my buzz the natural way, pumping iron and distance running fueled by a natural foods diet. Being buffed and in peak cardio shape is the best high you can have, although I don't try to force my lifestyle on to others.
