Should I rent a Car?
Going to Phuket for the first time. Staying a little ways off from the strip. Is it okay to rent a car there? Looks like there are a couple of major US companies operating there....Any tips on that or on driving around this island ?

I use my AMEX points to rent a car. Works fine for me. But only by Avis or Hertz, then im sure it is insured.

If you are going to be living within Patong Beach then a car will be a waste of time for going to the strip. There is little or no parking and you will have no end of aggro trying to find a space.
Best to only get the car when you want to do a drive round the island. This will save you some money.

Also if you have never driven in an Asian country before, it is totally different.
Expect Motorbikes inside you, outside you, infront of and behind you. In fact expect them to be everywhere. This is the number one (imo) thing you have to look out for. Do you want to be responsible for an accident?
But this is only if you are driving in really built up areas like, Patong, Phuket Town and the alike. If you are staying out of way in Nai Harn or Rawaii then motorbikes are not so bad, but you have to be on a constant look out for them.
THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!!!!

Where off the 'strip' are you?
I'd only bother with a car for touring the island/beaches/P Town...locally a car is a pain in the **** for reasons mentioned above.

Welcome to the board Bozi! It would be nice to know a bit more about you. Have you driven in Asia before? You'll find it to be a bit of a new concept with the "relaxed" state of rules.
If you do decide to drive just be careful and cautious on the roads. Have a nice time

During high season car is not an option. But low season I like having a car. Not only to take myself around the island, but makes me feel more safe. In first hand its your safety we are talking about, but as other have mention dont think you can drive as home. You always have to look for those motorbikes - they are everywhere.

..and tourists!!
I swear some people think they can't get run over when they are on holiday. Regularly have people standing in one lane waiting to cross with traffic coming at them. I actually ended up going in between a young couple the other day on the bike...and they gave me sh*t when I shouted at them

ooh ooh, can I be the first one in this thread to say...
Ruby123 - It would be great to know more about you
...or maybe not actually. Not good board etiquette to constantly ignore requests from other BM's in other threads.

I rented a car on my last 2 trips. It's a good option IMO to drive around the island and I have many friends in Kamala, Patong, Chalong, Nai Harn, so it is easier to me. Never had problem but I drive carefully for many reasons : Thai car drivers sometimes drive too fast or too slowly, breaking evry 5 meters, you have motorbikes everywhere as it has been said and if Thai people use to drive in Phuket, it is quite different for many farangs, sometimes drunk.
If you plan to stay in Patong, better you forget it as it is really difficult to find a place to park. I staid in nai nai road last time, most of the time I took a motorbike taxi to go to Bangla (20 bath) so I didn't care to be drunk, and sometimes I paked the car up soi Sensabai (in front of Bangla) for 40 bath/day.

If you saw some of the open flesh that I have seen in the pharmacey last trip to Koh Samui I'd say DO NOT RENT A MOTORBIKE!!! Look out for all the farangs wearing neat little white bandages on their lower calves as well.... motorbike exhaust burns.........MAI CHOB

This is what you also get if you ride in a Limosine Taxi doing well over 90KM
http://www.phuket-info.com/forums/ge...-tourists.html
So its not just motorbikes its everything...
Here are the photos of the girl i pulled out after she got to hospital
This is why I couldn't sleep for a few days and needed time off....So much worse when you are at the accident.

Pictures removed because they were appalling, and extremely personal I would have thought.
