Hajimemashite!
Hey,
I'll be going to Thailand for a month and a half and found this forum by chance while researching for some important information before I arrive on the 31st this month.
I find that forums and real time advice from BMs is typically more valuable than what one might find on an unofficial website 0.o.
A short intro (although i am bad at these things!):
I've been living in Japan for 1 year now. I can practically speak the language fluently and found the experience to be interesting. Of course, before arriving to Japan I researched data via forums similiar to this one...
I will be in BK for a week then will make my way to Phuket for the rest of the time. I may visit China and Korea during my stay as well.
Through my research I found some difference and similiarities between perspectives regarding gaijins(Ferangs :p).
Both cultures seem to possess resistance to us foreigners learning their language. According to the members here, they've encountered hostility when speaking the language. The situation is similiar in Japan, but since the people are more polite, they will simply give you a blank stare or won't believe you can speak the language in the first place. Fortunately the dialects can be learned from books or the people, unlike in Thailand where it is pretty hard to learn the religion dialects according to this forum.
I can go on with that subject, but I would rather do it at MTB or elsewhere if i meet the BMs in Phuket.
As for the women, I am sorry guys... But i am leaning towards the beauty of Japanese/Koreans... The beauty of TG's simply does not do it for me. So i guess i will be a rare case where i willingly do not accompany TGs :p.
I was wondering how to fend off TGs because I heard they will be going after your wallet on the streets. I was wondering what would happen if i suddenly shouted Japanese at them... Perhaps that would fend them off?(joke)
Anyway, I am looking forward to the cheap food, peace and quiet! Perhaps someone can recommend a good place to stay in Phuket? A place with a single room with private bathroom/shower?
Also, i heard going from BK to PH by bus is horrid, so anyone know any good travel agencies in BK that I could use for a short plane flight?
Looking forward to the trip!

welcome to the board mate!
in the accomodation & transportation section you can find plenty of information about various guesthouses. you'll have a lot of travel agencies in bkk to book a flight for phuket, shouldn't be a problem.
i m sure you'll enjoy your trip!
cheers

Hah, not knocking on the TG beauty, just saying it is not where my tastes are. But I will hold further opinions until I actually get there. Just judging from the pics that I have seen .
The big difference for me is that the girls i usually go with don't go with me because of money. They either want to escape the social aspects of Japan, practice english, or because they really do have a certain fetish for foreigners. Reasons can go on. But from what I have read, TGs usually go after foreigners not because they like the looks, but because they are living in poverty and need to make some dough to live a managable life :p. Or help their family survive, etc.
I was born in Romania but moved to America when i was around 4 months old. So one can say i am American (yeah another one!).
Looked at the accomodation & transportation section a bit before the post. Will look at it again soon! Thanks.

Your view of Thai girls seems to be a bit twisted there.
They are as varied in their reasoning and choice of partner as anybody else, how could it be any different? Go and see before you judge.

Welcome
Don't worry - all is not lost - there are several Japanese looking dancers in Dragon A Go Go.
The Summer Breeze in Soi Sans Sabai sounds like it would fit your needs. The owner Billpay is a fellow BM.:

Summer Breeze sounds like a great place to stay. According to other opinions of BMs. I will be looking for a place to stay in Karon though because i heard it is much more peaceful on that beach. Also $20 per night is a bit much for me, maybe if i could "negotiate" with billpay to lower it to $15 a night... :p
High season is over $50 for that hotel 0.o

If you are staying in Patong for a few weeks then I expect you could now get a reduced rate for long term rental.
You may find Karon a bit too quiet now low season is here. Why not stay in Patong and visit Karon when you want? Maybe better than staying in Karon and spending 200baht each way to go to Patong.

A communist yank - you don't get many of them
You asked about flights between BKK and Phuket - book over the internet in advance or even buy at the airport on arrival. There are several LCC operating out of BKK and also Thai Air is the main player but more costly, have a look in the travel section and see what peoples comments are.

Hello there,
I bet you change your mind about the Thai beauties once you've been there a few hours. Also I'm sure you'll change your mind about them all trying to steal your cash. I've been there many times and no trouble, but I still don't carry wads of cash on me person though. All in all I bet you have a great trip and more than likely will book your return flight as soon as you get home.
By the way I fiound that I get a lot better response from the Thai chicks when I try to speak their language. At least they seem to open up (in more ways than one) even though money always seems to do the trick as well. Try this website. It allows you to hear the pronunciation of the word.

Have a safe and trouble free trip.
