Hi everyone!!
Not sure why I've never joined this forum before! Some members will know me from the ThaiVisa forum. I'm a British guy, living in Thailand for about 4 years. The first couple were in BKK, but I then moved to Phuket since I preferred the lifestyle
I'm married to a Thai lady and we have a baby son. We live near to Phuket Airport/Nai Yang beach where we are building a small hotel for elderly and disabled tourists. I (my Thai company) also owns a few small bits of land around Amphur Thalang, so we will have plenty of building projects next year!
I worked for 20 years as a rocket scientist (true!) in the UK and Europe, primarily designing equipment for scientific and weather satellites. Then I started writing applications for mobile phone SMS text message services in the UK. I still operate that one-man-band business and it provides the majority of my income which allows me to live in Thailand.
My wife and I used to own a couple of bars on Sukhumvit Road in BKK. But after moving to Phuket we closed one down and now we just have a small Salsa bar which makes money for her family, (it's staffed by family members...)
I can speak, read and write Thai reasonably well. Understanding the language has really helped me to understand Thai people, (in more than just a linguistic sense).
I have a great interest in sustainable and renewable energy systems, and hope to do some research and design in this area. I'm just about to start a Masters degree by distance learning in Renewable Energy Systems. This should help me to get a better understanding of the whole subject. My previous degrees were in electronics and microwave communications, but I'm pretty rusty in that area now!!
I'm a radio amateur, and will get the paperwork for my Thai license on my next trip to BKK. I also operate several 'remote radio receivers' from my house which allows listeners all over the world to connect to them via the internet and tune them to listen to Thai and Asian radio stations. (PM me if that interests you).
Cheers - Simon
