Safety question

I will be arriving within 2 weeks to Phuket airport and it will be really early in the morning. I would like to know how safe is it to get a cab into town at that hour? The reason I ask is that I had a friend in the Philippines who took a cab really late at night and ended up getting robbed. I am pretty streetwise and tough but if there were three or more guys then I could be in trouble. I only speak survival Thai and I wouldn't know if a cabbie was calling his friends to set up a mugging or something so I am in need of some advice from some resident locals as to how to safely get from the Airport into Phuket town.

Thanks everyone for the advice. My hotel does have a shuttle and I will probably be using it. I feel alot better now. It's just that I have never been to Thailand but I have traveled around SE Asia before and I know that many areas are not so safe. I'll be there for 2 weeks. Hope to see some of ya'll out and about.
