Cheers from Scandinavia
I've been reading this forum with some infrequency for about 6 months now but until now have not posted anything. I've been living in Patong for 1 year now and 3 months in BKK before that. I'm pretty much settled in and not planning to go back.
I've had a stormy relationship with a thai girl and though I've heard and read a lot of stories, I still wonder if my GF was exceptionally difficult. If any interest exsists, I can certainly elaborate on it and let you guys comment.
It's over and buried for some time already so it's not a sore wound anymore but man if it ever was before.
To balance things out I've been lucky enough to meet one genuinely good girl too but as things stand, I'm single for now and feel good
I have to say that my first year here has been highly educational and disillusioning and though I sincerely hope the pace and extent of education slows down, I don't expect it to ever seize. Just when I think nothing surprises me anymore, something does
Anyways, I'm still alive and have all my limbs and major organs intact, I guess that's already some sort of achievement
Cheers
J.C.

Welcome...
I feel a little strange saying welcome to the board given how new I am, but welcome anyway.
Please do tell us whatever part of your story you feel comfortable telling. It is always interesting to hear the different stories people have to tell, at least for me.

Thanks for the welcome mates
Sorry I forgot to mention that I used to work here for a diveshop but quit that for reasons I explained in another post. I guess one could say I'm sort of retired though I'm in my late 30's. I arranged my business back home so that it can be run by my trusted friend with my input from pretty much anywhere so that earns me my living here. Not much but enough for me and life in LOS.
I do buy and sell the occasional motorbike every now and then just to keep myself busy. Nothing fancy but I like bikes
I'll post a rundown of my experiences here in the appropriate topic, once I can locate it. You know, almost everything is funny as long as it happens to someone else
Anyways, I'm here to stay. Somehow I prefer this to the upcoming snow and sleet back home, go figure...

Uhm, as far as I've been tought Scandinavian countries are Sweden Norway Denmark Finland and Iceland, hence the similarity in the flags too but be it as it may, I hate the winter in each of those countries and that's why I'm here and not there

Not a big issue, but I have never thought about Finland being a part of Scandinavia.
But looking into Wikipedia, then I realize that we learn something every day, even about our own neighbourhood.
Scandinavia is a region in Northern Europe named after the Scandinavian Peninsula. The most common definition includes continental Denmark, mainland Norway and Sweden.
Sometimes, Finland is included even in official contexts [1], although since the 1850s, with the rise of Scandinavism and Finnish nationalism, this inclusion divides opinions in all of the respective states. This is sometimes reflected with the usage of the term "Fennoscandia", mainly a geological term. In the English language, "Scandinavia" is often used as a synonym for the Nordic countries.
The usage and meaning of the term outside Scandinavia is somewhat ambiguous:
-Finland and Iceland are often counted as parts of Scandinavia.
-From a German point of view, Norway, Sweden and Finland are usually included, but Denmark is not.
-From a British point of view, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are usually included, often with the addition of Iceland and Finland.

Right, I saw the same text. Interesting. Especially the German point of view. My own guess to why this is so, is that when this whole Scandinavian identity grow up in the 1850'ies, then Germany had occupied major parts of Denmark and where really think of us as part of Germany!

Educational
Indeed one can learn new things even about their home every day, albeit in a very unlikely forum
I've spent a lot of time in germany and they have this peculiar habit of referreing to their once occupied towns, regions or locations with their german names, no matter what those might be called today. I'm sure it's in no way ill meant but it is somewhat confusing. I did find it interesting too that the Germans would not regard Denmark a part of Scandinavia at all, most likely because of the reasons mentioned by SMF
Anyways, from now on I shall not refer to myself as Scandinavian. I'll just use my same standard reply when BGs ask me where I'm from and say "Khoey bak sidaa Lao" That always gets them

Nope, it's not thai, it's lao and means "I'm a farang from Laos" Top it off with "Ilii" (thai = jing jing) when you get the disbelieving looks and enjoy the headshakes

Ok, my wife translated it: " I am a farang from country-side".
Lao = countryside
