This silly newbie has booked the wrong place!
Hi there, I'm off to Phuket for 2 weeks in December with my husband and daughter (19) and son (17). Travelling from Ireland via Singapore where we're having a short stop on the way back, 1 night only.
Flights are all sorted, the Phuket hotel is my problem
I read piles about where to go and decided on Banthai, we have rooms reserved but I just read a bunch of recent reviews that make me think Patong is NOT the place for us. We don't want really lively nightlife. We know everywhere is going to be busy but I'm afraid Patong is going to be way too busy for our liking.
Am thinking I should try and find somewhere in Kata, don't know much about Karon. Any thoughts?
I feel SO stupid

Hi Tree Tiger. I stay in Kata when I go. Its more layed back and more sutable for children. Nice hotels wi pool. I stay in the kata palm resort. But there are many hotels there. If you want a taxi can take you to Patong just to see what it is like. I have only stayed in Patong for one night so I cant comment. It is mainly geared up for partying tho. Beach in Kata is nice and safe for kids. Low key bargirl sceen in two places other than that it is not so in your face. I would take my kids to Kata but not Patong. Thats for me. . PM me if you want.

Whats the problem? I read some revues, and everybody was positive...
And it is not so close to Banla, so there shouldnt be so much disturbance for you. I dont think you should worry...
One question.. Didnt you do some investigation about where you where going? If so, you should have read that Patong is the "hotspot" on Phuket.

welcome to the board..I wouldnt worry about phuket being to busy Kata and Karon and most of tourist locations are in full flow at that time off the year high season..In my opion there is more family groups in Patong at that time and better weather means more fun during the day!.yes the nightlife is in full swing but you dont have to indulge every night..Im sure you wont have a problem always room for more tourists..have fun..

I looked up tripadvisor and the tone of the reviews on Banthai changed completely over the last couple of weeks, and it has me terrified!
It's my husband's first holiday in 3 years and I really want it to be right for him, we're spending a lot of money and I'm concerned he won't relax in a busy party place.
I did do some research on Patong, joined another board, and was given the impression that Patong was the only place to be! I also got the impression that Kata and Karon were kind of dead. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who's been to Phuket so it's hard to get good advice.
Thanks for your help. That's a bit reassuring re Banthai. I think if my husband can get to sleep at a fairly early hour it won't be too bad!

I don't know the Banthai, so can't comment on that. Generally though, if you are staying in a mid-range hotel away from Bangla and Taipan, the nightlife does not intrude.
The Thara Patong, which is stunning BTW, and the Salathai are only one block away from Bangla and you would not know that there is any nightlife close by; plenty of peace and quiet to be had if you want it.
There is no doubt that Patong will be busy in December, but in all honesty if you want to avoid the real loud nightlife you just don't venture down Bangla road in the evenings.

i know the banthai as i have had the occasional daytime scoop in the p&s bar there it is right on the beach road well away from bangla( the noisy bit!) high class resort hotel ,my only concern would be a little bit of late night traffic noise. so do not worry too much.

I'm sure he will be able to relax just fine, maybe send him for nice relaxing massage there are plenty of choices there.

you can avoid the nightlife quiet easy, and its not really in your face anyway some bars area a little quieter than others.
Nickes bar would be fine to take your son for a drink.
also all bars are not girlie bars.
I would stay in patong anyway, and nightlife doesnt really start until after 10pm in most areas.

I agree with this as well...
Welcome to the board TT...We travel as a family also...
It'a amazing really...one year we stayed in Baan Sukhothai, which is right in bangla...but the rooms themselves, we had a Waterhouse Suite, are set back away from the street in amongst beautiful serene gardens and fishponds with walkways and bridges over them and a swimming pool with a bar...you couldn't be closer to the action...but we never had any problem with noise for sleeping.

Baan Thai is well away from the girlie bars nightlife etc........and right across from the beach.......it is a 4 star+ hotel and has great accommodation (recently rebuilt or refurbed post tsunami)and service....
The worst problem you will have there re noise is the street traffic.....but it is set well back......and perhaps the bands playing along beach rd.....although this shlould only be a problem if you are right at the very front........
maybe just check with the hotel and ask for a quiet room away from the front.......

Thanks so much for your reassuring replies. I've run all this past my husband and he's happy to go with Banthai, so I can relax now!
We've booked deluxe rooms with pool access and now I can really look forward to December!

If you feel Patong beach is too crowded, it is easy to take a tuktuk and go to another beach. Surin, Kata, Nai Harn is not far away, and are beutiful beaches.
I think you will have a nice time there. I would advice you to read through old posts here and use the search function. There are alot of good advices about beaches, restaurants and things to do.

Tarzan makes a good point TT......make sure you get out and about and do tours and visit lots of diffrent parts of the island.....there are loads of beautiful beaches to explore as well.......you won't ever feel hemmed in then!
And the pool area at Baan Thai is a nice place to kick back too!!

Hi TreeTiger there is so much more to Patong and surrounding area than Bangla Road with great beaches and every restaurant you can imagine. There are many families who go back time after time, Bangla Road is obviously not suitable for your family and you can easily avoid that area. Do a search on the forum and you will have a great holiday, enjoy.

ive stayed in both hotels
i have personal reasons for not likeing bathai as they were rude to my thai gf that was a registered guest. i also thought the service was not that good
plus-the pools, just huge
i did like kata palms but i think banthai is better suited for you guys.
your children are nto so young so i think they would get bored with kata and may enjoy the nightlife of patong
your family will be fine at banthai
