Smile Pattaya and Phuket

I have tried everything to figure out how far these two places are from each other. I will be going to one of these places in October. My purpose is to retire on my meagar penson. There seems to be alot happining in Pattaya and I would hate to be too far from there. I am thinking Pattaya is and area close to Phuket?
I also hear that it is very humid. I am wondering if I can take the humidity. Is there any breeze that cools thing off? Any suggestions on where to retire is muchly appreciated. This is going to be a trial for me. I can decide to stay or to relocate. However, if I find a decent place and reasonable rent I am very likely to hang my hat there for quite some time.
Thanks

I guess your money would go further in Pattaya though? I would look no further than Phuket if money was not an issue, but there is far more to Thailand than Pattaya and Phuket.

Pattaya or Phuket

I don't have to go to cheap nor too expensive. I would like a place with some ocean and perhaps a nice beach area. I want a place where I can from time to time speak with my own kind. I will try and learn the language but is always nice to talk English with ex-pats. Like I told IJ I am kind of winging this. I have just received my full penion and can go anywhere I want to live. If Thailand is not for me I will be going to a place close to Medillin in Colombia. How do you guys deal with the humidity? I sure appreciate any input you all have for me as I will be in Bangkok by October 1st. I am looking for a place close to the action but not too close. A place where I can relax and smoke a nice cuban cigar at nice with a little scotch (single malt).
thanks all

Retire in Thailand

Steve thanks for the reply. If you were to retire (mayby you are?), to Thailand where would you chose to live and why?
thanks

As I said, if money were no object it would be Phuket. Not Patong, but close enough to it if I wanted some life. Kata, Rawai, a couple of other places I found attractive.

When you go to other places though, my wife's family are in Nakhon Sawan, you realise just how expensive Phuket is.

Realistically. If I can make it happen in the next five years or so then it will very likely be a house up-country with the wife, and trips to Phuket as and when the mood takes me. Like when my friends are in town.

For me, the ideal scenario is summers in England taking care of business, and winters in Thailand doing some work that can be delivered over the internet and keeping my bones from freezing.

The heat is definitely something you have to deal with, but air conditioning is enough for me during the day and the evenings are fantastic pretty much all year round. It's not really a problem.

Retiring

Thanks for the info. Kata and Rawai also sound great. From what I have learned so far it sounds like Patong is going to be the best place for me until I learn some Thai. I will try and find a school there a few days after my arrival. I imagine I will be flying from Bangkok to Phuket, then on to Patang. If you know of any schools etc where I can learn Thai I would appreciate that info. Your travels to and from Thailand for work seem ideal. My problem is that a flight from where I live in Canada is 19 hrs just to Bangkok. I don't want to be doing this very much in one year.
Best Regards,
Franko

Patong

Thanks IJ. Are there nice beaches in the Patong area? I would like to have my son visit me and he is a bit of a beach bum. What are your favorite bars in Thailand?
Regards,
Frank

Try Patong Language School, or what is the other one? Text and Talk, something like that.

Thai Language School

Thanks Steve I have written that information down and will follow through once I am in Patong. Can you think of anything I should bring that I cannot get in Thailand?
Thanks,
Franko

I would contact the language schools before you go, just to find out what is available.

I can't honestly think of anything you may not be able to get in Thailand, except maybe any medication you might need. Even then most things seem to be available over the counter, I got ventolin for half the UK price.

Just go, have a look, and enjoy.

Patong

That's good new Steve. I used to bring all kinds of stuff to give away to Cubans on vacatiion. I will not need to pack my suitcase with gifts. I understand I will NOT want to wear a sports jacket so I am leaving these at home. Patong here I come lol.

you may want to consider Nai Harn

hi

I read before that there's an attraction for american ex-pats in the Nai Harn area, a bit further south than Kata (15 mins drive) and I consider it my fav beach.

If I had the option to retire to Phuket that area would be very high up my list. But to state the obvious high ex-pat ratio higher property cost etc. The hills above Patong are also a nice location so don't rule out being a bit closer to a larger conurbation

ps Thought IJ had already retired??? lol

Hi lostgringo.

As much as I admire your plan to retire to Thailand, have you really given much thought to how to approach this? On the say so of a couple of BMs here, you have decided to go to Phuket and not Pattaya. I really do think you should go to Bangkok, rest up and look around for a couple of days, and then plan out a short tour of Thailand to check the place out. Start perhaps with Pattaya, 1.5 hrs taxi drive from Bangkok, stay for a week or so then perhaps fly down to Phuket and look around there. Then maybe go up north to Chang Mai for a few days, you may prefer it there, finally fly back to Bangkok and think about it.
Don't want to p1ss on your party, but its a helluva big step to be taking.

Have a good read in the Expat forum here, lots of tips and ideas. Also a good thread by an English guy who moved here last Sept and has posted a bit of a diary about living in Phuket and some of the pitfalls.

I wish you luck and success with your plans.

Tour

Thanks Caerphilly and Dawsey for the info. Dawsey you are absoloutely right and I think I actually going to try that for starters. In terms of going back to Bangkok only if I am catching a flight out. I am not fond of big cities and their pollution. Maybe I can find a short term rental somewhere until I am accustomed to the island.

Hi Lostgringo...this is good advice from Dawsey...My husband and I are also retiring to Phuket for a year or two and also have a thread in Expats regarding our impending move...which is sheduled for 26th September...

One thing is if you find the heat a bit much...it may be cooler in Chaing Mai...other BMs may be able to comment on this as I havne't been to Chaing Mai personally.

http://www.phuket-info.com/forums/ex...er-newbie.html

Good luck with your plans

lostgringo...I think you may be misunderstanding me here...If you are referring to my previous post...Chaing Mai is in Northern Thailand on the mainland...I just thought it might be cooler being in the north...

It's also a long way away from anywhere else, has no beaches, is definitely more humid as there is no sea breeze and has a lot of mossies.
