greetings and an introduction
gday all - stumbled accross this forum - great stuff....
I recently returned from a holiday in Patong - after an absence of 14 years - talk about stirring up memories! Went with the girlfriend so it was a reasonably well behaved trip but both of us are definately coming back again next year - she loved it just about as much as me....
I spent a most enjoyable year in Patong in 1987 and then came back a few more times for a month here and there - the last being 1992 - the place has really changed since then....
A couple of questions for you:
Are there any of the crew still around from 1987-92 - I was thinking about the boys who started up the expat bar (no longer there) and the expat hotel? Would love to catch up with them next time I am over if they are still in town.
A mate of mine recently bought the Freedom Bar in Soi Eric - Ash - do you guys know him - great bloke and well worth having a beer or two with...

The Expat Hotel is still there , and Paul (one of the owners) is usually around most days. Gary (the other owner) moved back to Australia a couple of years ago.
If you want to meet up with some of the "old crew" , I would suggest going out on the "Hash Run" on any Saturday , quite a few of the guys there have been around for a long time. Just turn up at the Expat hotel (Soi Sunset) at 14.30 and "register" in the Coffee Shop , bus leaves at 15.00 prompt.

Spider appears and then disappears , not sure who Leif is , but may know have known him to speak to.
A couple of other BM's , Dogblower (Robbie) and Crustasian (Paddy) may have a bit more info as they have both been around for a very long time.

longtime 300 baht
shortime 100 baht
good fan rooms at the C&N bungalows for 3000 pm or with fridge 3,500 a month
Friday beach cricket
John the pom getting pissed and always shouting out 'I dont care!! every 5 minutes
10 baht meals at the gutter restaurants and the beach was actually pretty bloody nice to swim
not to say its not as good now - loved it when I was over a month ago...

Just rembered another 87 memory - the mekhong whisky bottle you could buy and store at the bars - something like 80 baht got half a bottle and 150 baht for a full bottle - ice and maneow for free and bottles of coke at 15 baht

sorry no scans but have a poster sized picture of all the expats who where extras on 'good morning vietnam' - robyn williaam was a hoot. The expat boys also used to drive a beer truck to wherever we where filing - every one was half pissed throughout the filming - much to the disgust of the producers!!

yeah - the mekhong is not the best but you get used to it - used to get some pretty weird dreams though!!
One of the best things they have done is stop the traffic in soi bangla at night - reckon that has saved a couple of lives!!

Good question Bello - just seemed to drift away - focussed on my work/sport for a bit and also the various girlfriends I was seeing where not happy with a. me going to Thailand alone or with mates, or b. going to Thailand with me.
The current girl, who I have been seeing fro the last 3 years is a doozy and she is more than happy to come over with me.....
Not to sure if a could wangle a trip on my pat though - especially as I didnt get back to the hotel until 9.30 the next morning on the second night of the recent trip.......she was none too happy!!
