good photo oppurtunities in phuket
hi,
newbie here, i will be travelling to phuket in january 2007, i went there two years ago it was my first time in thailand but only stayed in phuket for a week, had a great time but the week flew by, anyway i have got into digital photography in the last year, so my question is where do i go for some great photo oppurtunities in phuket (and i don,t mean the go go bars ) scenery etc,i'm guessing there must be some budding amatuer photographers living over there who can point me in the right direction, any feedback greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Don't know what you like, but you could try:
1. Cape Prom Thep at sunset.
2. Gibbons Rehabilitation Project
3. Wat Chalong
4. Any waterfall
5. Chalong Pier looking back at the land.
6. Beaches on the north side of the island that are more or less deserted.
7. Take a boat ride east towards PhiPhi, and you'll think your on another planet
Good luck.

If you want the deserted look (long beaches etc) head north of the island or even head out round Phang Nga..
I think the limestone towers and landscape around krabi is pretty special also.
Depends what you are looking for really..

Personally thought the JB island thing a bit of a hustle for no real payoff..
Just mini busses of of tourists having overpriced tat shoved under thier noses.. Maybe I was just having a bad day..

Sea conoeing in Phang nga bay may be a good photo opportunity, very beautiful and if you go by canoe you will enter lagoons and such via caves.

Also try out the sunset or take some evening pictures from the lights around Bangla. With a bit of playing with the settings of your camera, you should get some nice ones. It is fun practising.
If you have a (digital) SLR, try this setting: Select the "A" mode. Put your aperture on F/8 and use a (small) tripod or put your camera on a stable thing e.g. a table or so. The use the self-timer to avoid any shaking. Don't forget to cover your view finder on the back of your camera body. Result should be perfect.
If you use a compact style camera then check your manual. Usual it had a dedicated program for such pictures.
In my opinion you will get the best results just before it gets totally dark.
Success and have fun.

Butterflies and flowers?
If your keen enough and patient enough you could try a butterfly farm or an orchid plantation for something exotic....my prference is for a deserted beach and if tou can find a co-operative model it adds to the exotic atmosphere.
I'd agree that JB island offered very limited photographic inspiration and had better shots on a Phi Phi day trip than the sea cave adventure. I thought pics didn't do the sea caves justice and that's more a video experience. Beaches south of Kata and north of Surin were my best inspiration to date.
Look forward to seeing your photographs

thanks
some great suggestions there guys, thanks very much, and nice shot caerphilly nicely composed, and very attractive girl, i bought myself a nikon D50 about 3 months ago so will be bringing that with me, just got the kit lens at the moment which is'ent all that great, also got a 50mm f/1.8d which is good for portraits but not much good for landscape shots, so will try and get a decent lens for landscapes before i leave england, i was just wondering though would it be worth waiting til i get to LOS maybe i might pick something up there cheaper, any ideas on that guys ? i was'ent going to take my tripod but i think it might not be a bad idea to take it, as it's quite small and compact, i will be staying at ayathuya for a couple of days before flying to phuket, as i've been told it's worth a visit and plenty to photograph there, will definately post pics when i'm back, so roll on january.

thanks...........
that shot was taken in 2005 with an old works ricoh digital with limited quality and memory you can find some of my more recent pics if you search taken in 2006 with a £250 olympus 8Mg (i think) that is a half way house between a simple digital and a digital slr.
The humidity of 2005 killed the Ricoh which was a bit of a shame it was a good simple camera that fitted in your pocket and didn't need extra thin fingures to use the buttons. When I was looking for a replacement I had real trouble with the button size and fingure size of the point and shoot digitals but I can't fit what I bought in my pocket so its a risk when out in bars etc
you may be better off taking your nikon and investing in a low cost point and shoot for party time shots in and around the bars?

Have you checked out the Photograpy section under "Idle Chit Chat" yet?
Quite a few examples of BMs work with Nikon D50/70 that is good stuff.

Don't think it was a bad day Lil. Those were my observations as well. Far nicer spots to see than JB Island, its very overhyped and touristy.
And those vendors must be the most aggressive I've come across in my visits

I have a D70, and the 18-70 kit lens is ideal for landscapes and around town. I have found that the polarizer filter is a permanent attachment and a really good investment. I also took a Hoya filter kit with an ND grad and an orange grad filter, very useful.
Also, I think taking your tripod is a must. The sunsets are breathtaking and you will want longer exposures to do them justice and to get what you want. They don't weigh much and you will regret leaving it behind.

thanks
ok thanks again guys for some interesting info, dawsey i had a look at the photos on the chit chat section, some really nice ones on there, so i will definately take the tripod then, i will also be taking a small compact just for the nights out and about in the bars, as theres no way i would consider hauling a DSLR about, far to much hassle and probably not very wise if you get to pi**ed, really looking forward to it now, so just another couple of months to go
