Keep your windows shut and the fan on, it works for me. Its sitting out in the bars where I get bitten. Little bastards.

Hi-was in Patong last year-August/September and had no problem with mosquitos-admittedly I wore 100 per cent deet all the time-but I didnt notice any around.Has the situation changed or are they more active at different times of the year. Will be back on 25th.November for two weeks-should I pack my 100 per cent deet again?

They eat me alive, I always wear jeans and socks in the evenings and make sure to douse myself in a good reppellant (DEET is the thing to look for, as has been said)

If you can, it has to be worth having.

The mozzies here seem impervious to bloody DEET. The PX sells OFF (*other repellants are available) it works on Jiggers and other bugs too!!!! You can see your own arm or leg deflating here as the mozzie sucks out your life force.........a tad disconcerting I can tell you!
Anyway, the mozzies here just love DEET and blood. I am looking for a bigger, new and improved tin of something called 'FCUK RIGHT OFF' and contains pure Benzene, meths and anthrax. Might have to be a bit more careful when sparkin' a ciggie up tho!

Mozzie repellant should do the trick, there are more around after it rains and between 6 to 7pm. I do not use anything anymore and get bit about once a week, trick I have learnt is do not scratch the bite, grin and bear the itchyness for 20 minutes and it just goeas away, scratch it and it keeps itchy all night and you have a big red bite mark next day.

Use the local lemon grass mozzie repellant - works better than western stuff.
When biten use balm that comes in 1" green tin - in Thai (?? forget name) - excellent (23Baht in pharmacy) stops the irritation.

I've found it best to cut out the bite or infected area with a small rusty bayonet and eat the offending flesh!
Goes down well at parties.
PS: Only joking with ya...............Always use a big clean and sterile bayonet.

Yeah lemon grass works really well. Citronella oil also, maybe even better than lemon, but it stinks a bit. They say the trouble with 100% DEET is it comes off too quickly and in some cases you're better off with 60%.

Thanks guys for the advice.I used 100% deet last time-and not a bite. Will try some of the local brew this time and see how it goes.Denver,as I am a pacifist it would be against my principles to use the rusty bayonet--so I will pass on ur remedy-good as it might be.Hope you are keeping well.

Never had a major problem in and around Patong but once you get up the hill watch out! Take Dodgers advice and don't scratch them.

I'm fine Johndon thank you.
I would pass on my remedy too as it would probably really, really hurt.
Also watch that DEET stuff and eyeballs that........also really, really hurts!

Yep they always find the bit that you have missed.

There is a high street store in the UK forgot thier name now and it's annoying me that sell camping gear, rucksacks, boots etc for the masses. Thier own brand is Peter Storm I think. It isn't Blacks of Greenock but they sell them also.
You can get mozzie nets there, pack small and get a can of spray and give the net the once over every now and again. If you are staying at a hotel the cleaning staff will normally give your room a blast with the spray every day on cleaning your room. Aircon will keep them down. At my hotel they left the cleaning trolley in a little corridor between buildings so I just used to 'borrow' the can of spray if I had a mozzie who thought he had grown an immunity!
I used to have a net for working in West and East Africa but there are that many fag burns in it now that it somehow defeats the object!
Millets, there...............got it!

Drink versus DEET
Rather than spray myself with insecticides that melt the plastic on chairs just drink heavily.
One thing is that the little bugers hate it and the other is that you don't feel it.
Mossie nets can be bought in the local markets if you still want one.

Does this theory hold?
Premise;
Thai people get bitten by mossies as babies so after a few weeks they develop a tolerance to the crap that the mossies leave behind that causes the big lump/irritation etc. So as adults they still get bitten, it just doesnt show.
Therefore; Farang expats who have been here a number of years should develop the same tolerance?
Is this true? Can expats confirm or deny please?

If you get bitten take a couple of chlorphenamine tablets. These are very cheap and easily available anti histamine to stop the itching in a few minutes.

Not tried any anti hystamine solutions and not sure I would like to be constantly taking such a drug (hystamine is a part of the bodys defense mix after all)..
You do get better at handling them and you also learn not to scratch them and its the picked at ones that last..
If your really effected or are going to areas with high mossie counts.. You can safely take B12 yeast pills.. Big brown horse tablets that make your pee stink.. Mossies dont seem to like your blood as much if you are taking a daily one.. Its not 100% but it helps..

Hay fever suffers take these on a regular and frequent basis without any ill effects that I am aware of and I have taken them when required for about 30 years. Not only do they stop the itching but they also stop the swelling around the bite.
