Newbie hi to all

I am a newbie to the forum and to thailand. I have been to Bangkok once on buisiness in 2000 - didn't know my way around - although my host provided me with a LT girl - which would not have been my choice and I stumbled on the Thremae one night by accident and took a ST back to my hotel in the old city.
I now have a chance to return - either november or april and of course will bypass bangkok and head Mai Tai bar area. Thinking the expat as a place to stay - but the question is best way to get there - any advise on dates and transport methods would be appreciated.

Welcome to the board.
If you are just going to Phuket you might want to make your reservation from the US with an airline that can connect you all the way, This may include THAI, Malaysia, Singapore, EVA, etc. If you are going to book a flight to Bangkok you have a few options, THAI, Bangkok-Air, etc. Personally I favor THAI for domestic flights, even though they are not the cheapest. THAI's fares are fixed and and changeable and refundable. One way BKK to Phuket is about US$75. Business class is an additional US$25.

November is the beginning of the high season and at this stage I would be surprised if airfares will be that attractive, but a search will confirm or dispute that. April the beginning of low season and many deals are there to be had. I have spend a week in Phuket in late March and the weather was just fine, assuming April will be close to that, I personally would pick that time.

As for a place to stay in Phuket my knowledge is limited and you are better off browsing around and getting additional advise from other board members. Once you get a few hotels that seem suitable to you, click the "Thailand Hotels" link on top of this page and fine your hotel options. Most of them have extensive reviews, which can further guide you.

Again, welcome

Welcome Rider,

First, welcome to the board.

I agree with MrDK that November might be a little tougher to find deals on airfaires and rooms... but my philosophy is the sooner the better. If you can get over in November ... do it! Who knows, maybe you'll be so inspired that you'll come again in April.

I agree with flying Thai Air within Thailand, very easy to change if needed. If your international flight gets into Bkk at a reasonable hour, then just give yourself 2 hours and book the next Thai Air flight to HKT (usually 8 or so flights each day).

I would highly recommend Summer Breeze Hotel, but probably already booked for November. Expat is ok too.

Good luck.

Stay a night in Bangkok. If you really want to get going to Phuket you can stay in one of the airport hotels. Depending on how you deal with jet-lag you can also head straight for Sukhumvit Area. The bars are supposed to close at 2AM, but there are always some activity past that time. In this case you may want to schedule a mid-day flight to Phuket the next day. Whatever you choose I wouldn't let a late arrival stop me from going.

Singapore Airlines gets into Phuket and/or Bangkok in the afternoon out of San Francisco. And they have good rates on flights between the 2 cities if you want to do both.

I get into Phuket at 205PM with Singapore on April 8th at the moment.
