Private Dancer
Just finished reading this excellent book i bought off Amazon. Essential reading for any newbie before going to Thailand. Would have saved me alot of money and heartache for sure, forewarned and forearmed and all that !!
Those who have read it, i wasn`t expecting that ending.
Is Fatsos or Zombies based on any particular joint ?
Incidentally was in a lap dancing joint here in town and girl i spent evening with was named Joy. My name ? Pete.

Private Dancer - deserved to get published, but imo David Young gets way higher rating on these kind of books, even though David Young tends to let the fantasy's run away a bit and take away from the realism i still think he's closer to reality.

Agree with everything Jim just said.. David Young is head and shoulders above Leather for the Thai scene (fast eddys lucky 7 agogo being a fave) but let fantasy run a bit to far in Sukhumvit.. Scribe is superb IMHO.
Chris G Moore does great bangkok / Thai fiction but with the girls as only an incidental.. Kinda the way it should be for a real expat mindset.. Cold hit I read recently and the BKK locations were just superb, you could smell the street stall and slum klongs..
PD I found to be a bit over the top and stereotypical and found myself feeling more for joy than for pete.. Pete seemed out of his depth and desevered half of what he got.. Havent read the printed book yet tho.

Not read the books mentioned here, but did get a copy of Thailand Fever in BKK airport went i passed through there last time, dunno what the more experienced BM's here think of it, but i'm assuming its not that inaccurate, and worth a read.

I read Private dancer before i went to Thailand, which in hindsight gave me a tainted view of BGs... Joy seemed to think going with customers and having Pete as her boyfriend as two separate things and they didn't mean anything to her, so no problem and his paranoia increased. But i agree with LiL that as the book went on i did feel for Joy. It gave me a cautious approach to the BG scene but have landed up with one, but hopefully won't end up the same as pete !.... worth a read

"Private Dancer" is a good read...can also recommend
"Even Thai girls cry" By J.F.Gump, that book made me misty eyed, very good.
"Thai Girl" By Andrew Hicks, Good novel, proberly gonna get filmed By Hollywood.
"Bangkok Kiss" by David thomson, Good read, a bit like "Even Thai Girls cry"
"The Butterfly Trap" by Dennis Jon, Hillarius and fun read.
And Finally "my name Lon.You like me ?" By Derek Sharron, narrating a true BG's life story, a bit old, but very informative in some parts.
The best book of the above mentioned, is in my opinion, "Even Thai Girls cry", i really felt for Math and her cruel destiny

I read Private Dancer after my 2nd trip to LOS. I hadn't found the board yet, so I was really still quite naive about BGs and the tricks they sometime can get up to. In the beginning, I had a lot of empathy for Pete, but not for long. He got too hung up on trying to even the score for times he felt slighted. Any time you feel that way about a girl, you had best forget about her and move on. Especially in LOS, where obsession spells trouble. Loads of fish in the sea.
As for Joy, when she lied about the ring, and the DJ BF, how could you feel much sympathy for her after that? Admittedly, Pete didn't treat her well, and she had a really f*cked-up family to contend with. But, just the same, that doesn't excuse her actions, either.
All in all, a good read, because it exposes you to all the BG scams, and, at times, takes you back to the streets and bars of BKK. But, even so, the story is a bit far-fetched. Starts out very believable, but sacrifices credibility, in order to set the stage for its' sensationalistic ending.'

PRIVATE DANCER is a work of fiction and that is how it should be read.
IMHO some parts are true to fact other arent but as stated it is a work of fiction and should be treated as such.

I like to read books by John Burdett Bangkok Eight and Bangkok Tattoo also Laundry Man by Jake Needham this book takes you to bankgkok, you can smell and taste it. Dean Barett is a classic he's an easy read and includes many thai things that we are familiar with. I have also read a book named it's about Lek (maybe i got the title wrong) very moving story I even shed a tear or 2

In regards to pvt dancer, I agree with aussie dollar. The only thing you should read before visiting LOS is this forum.

That's true and that's what makes it a good read. And, to be honest, when I read it way back when, I was rooting for the two of them, in spite of how screwed-up they both were, to get the happy ending that they almost had, before her family ****ed things up once and for all. Looking back on it, I am not as sympathetic to them now, but I get a little cynical at times. Maybe it's just a phase I am going through!

Hello my big honey ??
Love letters between punters and thier girls and then interviews showing more real thoughts and feelings.. Probably pretty good into to some of the mindsets but they did find some seriously limp farangs.
I probably would have enjoyed reading it more when my experience here was lower.. After a bit it was just more of the same and you hear the stories every night.

Greene... Graham Greene ?? The Quiet American ??
If that's the one, what I love about his writing is that he never paints people as black and white, good or bad.. All his characters seem to possess shades of grey with motivations and interests entirely their own. Seemed more honest and real to me.

and the politics underlying the story.
