Finding friends in the Phuket area
Hey all,
Yet another newbie intro...
I've been in Phuket for about 1.5 months now and plan to stay for some time - I'd like to meet others (especially female!) who are here long term, just to have a few mates and such (I'm not after anything sexual). My social circle here is somewhat limited and I'm not really sure how to expand it as I'm not working at the moment and don't have the funds to go out doing stuff much, i.e. hobbies, partying etc. It would be great just to have someone to go out for a coffee and have a chat with once in a while, not to mention making proper friends out here since we plan to be around for a while. Having travelled for a while I'm getting really tired of just meeting people who I'm only ever going to know briefly, the usual 'where are you from, what do you do at home, where have you been so far, where are you going next'... if you've been a traveller you know what I mean. I sometimes wished I had a laminated A4 sheet with all this information so I could hand it to anyone who speaks to me and get it over with, so we could get down to actually talking about something else!
Having said that, here's the blurb: I am a Finnish 34yo female, living with my fiance who is a dive instructor. I am also a diver but not professional. Mostly I'm interested in computers, languages (I am a professional translator), travelling, diving... used to rock-climb too but haven't done it in a while, though the rocks in Krabi look mouth-wateringly inviting. I'm a pretty easy-going person, friendly, chatty when I feel comfortable. My fiance and I both took a year out some time ago and went to Australia on a working holiday, which is where we met. After that year, things just weren't going to go back to 'normal' so here we are now, having been out since Feb 06 and lived in Indonesia for 7 months - it doesn't look like we're 'going home' but rather redefining where home is. It could well be in Phuket, providing that we can find enough work to support ourselves.
So there you go. Hi everyone!

Welcome to the board Perky -
Your not alone with this feeling after living here long term, so can understand how you feel.
You may find that apart from the bar scene you might like to come Hashing ... no rock-climbing but a great way to meet people (mostly expats or regular visitors) - meet every Saturday at Expat Hotel (Soi Sunset - Tai Pan Soi) for bus departure at 3PM.
Phuket Hash House Harriers - a drinking club with a running problem
Best wishes,
K2

Thanks for the welcoming, guys...
K2, I must confess my ignorance here - what IS hashing? I understand that it involves running but I've never heard of hashing before. I could do with something to stay fit though - the heat isn't very conducive to excercise in general

Haha, why did I know this was going to come up? Yes, guys, I am well aware of the connotations and images 'perky' might summon up but it's just a name that I have used in the past and I thought it might be fun to use it again. Gives you something to giggle about doesn't it?

Hi perky (I like this name) Welcome to the forum.
If you go into the Mai Thai Bar in Soi Eric and introduce yourself to the owner Nicke, he will in turn introduce you to many other BMs, some expat, that meet there for drinks. Its a good start to meeting new friends in Phuket.
Nice to see another female member with a good sense of humour too

Welcome to the board perky.
You sound as if you shouldn't have too much trouble finding mates around Phuket.
I made a few myself...
Looking forward to getting back!

Welcome
Welcome to the Board Perky.... I'm sure the advice given so far is to turn up at one of those Hash meetings or call into the MTB.
I knew the Finish Consulate General and his family which was based here in Sydney. They just moved back two years ago now, but being away from that cold weather has climatized them to want to return and live in Sydney permanently.
I sure your not missing all that snow...enjoy you time in Phuket.

Yep, that has been the general advice, I guess I'd better go out that much at least. I got so pissed at Christmas that I fell off a chair, since then I've not really felt like going out for drinks... but on that note, we were thinking about seeing the new year in in Patong - any suggestions for a place that isn't all about the girls (we're really not after finding a third party to our relationship or any of that) but still a bit more than your average bar where all you do is drink?
As for the snow - I do actually miss it sometimes, the variation more than anything. +30C day in, day out can be quite draining. But I don't miss the slushy weather that I used to get in my home town, where snow never sticks for more than a couple of days. And I don't miss the darkness (I'm a bit of a seasonal affective disorder sufferer).
